He looked promising at the end of last season. Hopefully he will be the player we hoped for in the coming season. But its not really possible to tell too much based on a couple of friendlies
Yesterday was the first pre season game I have managed to get to and he was very good last night too. Has worked so much on his all round game and looks far better now than this time last year. Will be a key player for us this season
Looking forward to seeing him this season. Hecky seems to have managed the situation superbly to turn it from Moncur wanting out and looking out of his depth to him potentially being an integral part of our team.
He was never out of his depth. Wasn't shown he was wanted after moving out of the south east. Yes doing what he did at Colchester now
I'm pretty sure we don't pay £500k for players we don't want. And he definitely looked out of his depth at the start of last season.
Some excellent management by Hecky sorted Moncur out and got him focused and firing brilliant man management.
Many players who have been proven have looked out of their depth, Angus, Conor H, Roberts in the first few games. They have then been coached, developed their experience, technique and speed of thought to operate at this level. They then looked as good if not better than most of their peer group. I believe most (maybe not all) will go through the same transition, they have to for us to be successful. Moncur to me looked like he was adjusting early season and then his loan didnt help him or us. Then he came back refocused and committed. His last few games he showed great potential and the more he played the better he looked. I like the way he tries to play and has shown he can play alongside Mowatt, all be it in a friendly environment. However what i see in the squad they would be my starting midfield pair. They look fitter and better prepared. I reckon they and the the team have to work hard on our plan and approach when we dont have the ball, as all our midfield right now seem more orientated to playing the ball and attacking. We also have McGeehan to come into the reckoning who along with Sessi will increase competition for places. Good to see yesterday the progression in the last week alone and how certain players are starting to look like starting picks in their specific roles
It sounds more like he came with a billy big ******** attitude before reality hit home and he realised he'd actually have to put some graft in to reach this level, or he'd waste his career at a non club like Posh Spice FC.
Angus MacDonald came from the south west (even further away than Essex) and was on the bench for the same length of time as we still had Mawson. But he knuckled down and got on with it then took his chance when it came. We wanted him and signing him and paying him a wage showed this. Moncur should have done the same instead of looking for a way out after 3 games on the bench. Had he done that, he'd have been straight in the side as soon as Hourihane left, just as Gus was when Mawson went. Instead he was still kicking dust after a fruitless loan spell at Peterborough and hasn't become a contender to start for us until. Moncur only has himself and his advisers to blame for it taking until now to show his worth in a red shirt. It's certainly not mismanagement by the coaching staff.
Man management is not a 'one size fits all' skill. Some people respond to an arm around their shoulder, some need a good bollocking, others need technical guidance flip charts and lectures to develop. I think it's unfair to castigate Moncur because he responded differently to McDonald when making the transition. The important thing is that the management team recognised a different approach was needed and the player is now in a position to kick on at Barnsley.
Not true. He said he was home sick and wanted to play games. It's unfortunate that it happened, but not true he wasn't wanted.
Merely an observation, but watching him last night I think there is still a bit of that in him, billy big ****** I mean . There were times last night when he appeared to be posing rather than imposing. Looks like playing him deeper will improve his all round game.
Moncur came to Oakwell having never had to really fight for his place since joining Colchester, and wrongly got it into his head that the team would be built around him. When he got here, it was a real shock to his system that there were players in front of him in the pecking. This along with letting his dad have too big an influence on him led to his attitude coming across as poor. Lord Heckingbottom did the right thing by loaning him out to a club in League One that had a better quality of player than he was used to(at that level), thus making him realise that he had to put the work in and be patient if he were to make it at this level...
Hecky didn't want him to go out on loan but rather stay and get his head down and be ready to take his chance when it came as it surely would have done
Well done Hemsy. Id have been disappointed if you'd passed up the chance to have a dig at Hecky. Was the opening post tailored to give you the opportunity to make that comment or did you pounce on it like Winnall in front of a suddenly empty net?
