Not lived in town for 20 years now, but was just looking at google maps. It says Oldtown is at the back of Asda. I thought that is Honeywell and old town is around the area of the Miners Rest and Greyhorse. Am I wrong?

I'm from round there and I'd totally agree with you.

Personally, (and I might be wrong here) but I'd say the border between Honeywell and Old Town would be Hudddersfield Road. So Sailsbury St, Kensington Road etc Old Town, but old Seth Armstrong (forgot this road) off the other side of Huddersfield Road) being Honeywell stretching down to near the Asda.

That said, I wouldn't class the girls high school as Wilthorpe, Old Town or Honeywell.

I always considered old town as Summer Lane towards Dodworth. Perhaps towards the hospital and other way to back of Morrison's around where old baths were.

Might just be me like but I've genuinely always thought that (I'm 47).

I agree. Having been brought up in what I consider to be "Old Town" this is what I'd say is Old Town. Anything to the right of Huddersfield Rd is Honeywell, and further out of town is Wilthorpe. The Miners Rest and the Grey Horse being at the Centre!

That's what I'd call Town End.

Cavendish Rd? I'd say that's Honeywell. But Stan did spend quite alot of his time in Old Town - at the Miners and Grey Horse. Was a good friend of my parents.

Cavendish Road - lived there, fond memories. Would often see Stan walking past on his way to The Miners.

As an aside, I was driving past the Miners before Christmas, and noticed some guys working on the shop that used to be Jimmy's fruit and Veg at the top of Kensington Rd. It did occur to me that now would be a great time to have a local fruit an veg supplier, just like the old days.

Never noticed that - but you're right, it's there, and it's incorrect in my opinion.

I was a member of the youth club next to St Paul’s Church and played for the U18s football team - our name was Old Town St Paul’s. Many a scratch game was played on that rough ground (is grass now) between Greenfoot Lane and the church, Backing on to Queens Drive. Scores of young men and boys used to turn up there on a light evening to play football on a terrible surface with a steep hill at the Greenfoot end. People would come out of nearby houses to sit on the wall and watch.

I lived in Rowland Road for only a few years but this area gave me some of my happy growing up memories. Maybe it was a 1960s thing but the vicar of St Paul’s was able to insist that the younger members of his youth club take confirmation lessons if we wanted to be club members, and we all complied!

Happy days. I wish I could see pictures or cine film of that big field and the 20-a-side matches. Even better, a time machine just to go back for just one day.

PS. The Old Town St Paul’s football team’s home pitch was on that large field opposite Walton Street, off Rowland Road. That had a heck of a slope to it too. I was only 15 but played in goal for the “men’s team”.

That patch of land at St Paul's was also our Sledge run. Happy memories of around 8 at a time in an old tin bath cutting through the snow!

Oh Jimmy's. Used to go up there regularly with my mum when I was a bairn. Still remember him adding up peoples payments on the back of a paper bag. Then on to Gerry's corner shop on Cutty Lane.
