I always thought mist was more polite than ****. Like the equivalent of manure. Scheiße would be ****.

I first heard mist when I was 11 years old, so 83. I was on holiday in Germany, on a farm house in Bavaria, and I spent all day every day with a German girl who was 14. She taught me German and taught me how to snog and put her hands down my shorts. Everything was mist, apart from each other. We swapped addresses and I promised I'd write, she did, I never answered her letters. I was brought up on council estate in Barnsley and I didn't know how to write. I just knew I was **** and would never amount to anything, it was repeated every day. I ******* wish I'd answered her letters now.

I confirm, "Scheiße" (or "Scheisse") is a very strong word, a swear word, that you wouldn't use in business, in the company of children or with strangers, and means s h i t in the worst sense of the word. "Mist" on the other hand is a very mild word which roughly translates as "manure" and is used to mean "damm!","drat!" etc!". It would be used, for example, if you spilt some curry sauce down your previously gleaming white shirt. As opposed to spilling beer, which of course would be a major disaster warranting the use of "Scheiße".

And even better, they had to rename the Vauxhall Nova as it means Vauxhall Doesn't Go
