Does anyone know what that high pitch siren is that goes off at random times in the night is near staincross?
I have been told its to do with the underground gas venting from Wooley colliery from the oid building on the top of woolly edge. I heard it go off at 5 am last week.
Some say it's the infamous Staincross Banshee. Legend has it that the sirens first began when a stretch of the A61 between Barnsley and Wakefield, running through staincross, was named the most dangerous road in Britain due to fatalities in car accidents. It is thought the banshee was one of the first victims of the road shortly after its opening, and she gives out a cry of victory ever since the road was named the most dangerous in Britain. Nobody knows how to silence her cry. However the stretch of road is now listed as the 3rd most dangerous; rumor has it that when the road slips out of the top 10, the Banshees cry will cease. Or the ghost of the shift change siren at North Gawber pit. They're about to build more houses on its old site so could have disturbed the spirits. Can remember hearing the shift change siren at Woolley Colliery from Kexborough infant school when I was a kid.
It's not from the Woolley way (on a serious note) I live in Darton and I can't hear it so it might be towards Athersley. Unless I could sleep through an earthquake. Or a siren.
A few farms have sirens for when its time to milk the cows. Could be that or it could be yer imagination.
There's a siren every Monday morning at Hepworth pipe works, it's our comah alarm. It's an air raid siren that goes off for about 2 minutes.
