Unwise words but they were made when he was a minor, in some cases still at school. He was clearly just messing with pals, maybe didn’t really know the connotations of the words he was using, or at least not the impact.

I would hope they take the fact he was not an adult into account

When I was 16 I wrote in my Maths homework book "Ms Finch is a dyke". It was wrong, but I hope if someone goes through my Dad's loft that the book doesn't find it's way into mainstream media.

Edit: It was dealt with at the time. She slapped me across the face and I got a detention.

I would imagine if you looked at many 16 year olds tweets or messages they would look similar. Problem is kids are judged because these things are logged on social media etc to be used against them at a later time. Daft not malicious.

I think what happened is that after the altercation he had last week with Firmino during the derby, where Firmino allegedly racially abused Holgate, Liverpool fans immediately took to Twitter to try and dig up dirt on Holgate. As seems to be the way these days.

He immediately deleted his profile when the old tweet came to light.

There’s always the possibility HOLGATE was referring to a pork and offal food product , and his mate was a supporter of F.C. Bate Borisov

It really annoyed me when this all kicked off last week. Liverpool fans bitter about him shoving Firmino tried to dig up dirt on him, and found these old tweets.
The abuse he was getting on Twitter was ridiculous - nasty stuff. People were jumping on the bandwagon too, calling him homophobic etc and trying to smear him.
Those tweets were stupid and ignorant, but I’m afraid it’s the sort of stuff that loads of 16 year olds write and say! They don’t know better at that age. I’m sure he regrets it now - or at least regrets not deleting those tweets earlier!
With regards to the alleged racial slur used by Firmino, it seems like Holgate misheard him. Fair enough if it didn’t happen, but Liverpool fans taking the mick of this on twitter and using it as another stick to beat Holgate with doesn’t sit well with me either. The guy thought he got called something horrible and got angry about it - fair enough if you ask me.

Thing this is going to lead to is fans of other teams trawling players pages looking for similar misconduct every time something happens like this now.

At that age, I was convinced I knew more about football than anyone else. It wasn't even up for debate. I knew I was a better manager than the bloke in charge at Oakwell at the time, Jim Iley. I could pick a better team and have them play a better standard of football. Not only that, but I knew how to run the club better than the chairman, Ernest Dennis. If anyone disagreed with me then they were wrong. I achieved this feat whilst never having done a day's work in my life, nor shouldering an ounce of responsibility. My arrogance & ignorance knew no bounds!:D
Oh, and I also lusted after the likes of Jenny Agutter, Susan Penhaligon, Susan George & Valerie Leon!
    Oh to be sixteen again!:D

I actually did my O'level Economics project on Barnsley FC & got to interview Johnny Steele, who was General Manager at the time. I wished I still had a copy of it. I got an "A" obviously. I lusted after the same women...

happy days - used to love Susan George films in those days - she always seemed to lose her kit somewhere in the film and as for Jenny Agutter - I remember having to watch Walkabout for homework - one of those rare times when homework was not a chore.

But back to the OP - if Holgate gets punished now for immature tweets when he was 16 its getting beyond silly
though I can say with complete certainty I have no tweets or facebook/instagram posts likely to haunt me from when I was 16 :)

You had to watch Walkabout for homework??? Flipping Heck! You lucky sod!:D
The nearest I got to something along those lines was having to watch The Merchant Of Venice at Bradford Alhambra, with the rest of the class doing English Lit. 'O' Level. It was dull as ditch water, until the actress playing Portia climbed out of a bath and I got my first sight of a full frontal naked woman in the flesh! None of us teenage boys had realised just how enjoyable Shakespeare could be!:D
