Just had our week in Normandy for the last week in May cancelled by the campsite we were supposed to be stopping at. Wasn't surprised and didn't expect to go, but I'm guessing that France must be writing off most of their holiday season already. They have offered either a refund or a re-booking at a later date; this year or the next and we have took the re-booking offer because the poor sods must be desperate for cash. I would trade anything I have got planned this year for a week in Cleggy if it were guaranteed and I bloody hate Cleethorpes!
It’s being done quite carefully, just had our holiday cancelled too (last week in May) but while it seems obvious to most of us there’ll be no foreign travel for the foreseeable future; the travel companies are trying their best to pretend its a very temporary blip. a colleague said this morning that Tui are still advertising a week in Spain mid May from Manchester, despite Spain not wanting visitors and Manchester having no flights beyond the dates advertised
Our rail tour of Scotland due to start in a week has been cancelled we are waiting to re-book next year. We are now sweating on our fortnight in a Cornish cottage in early July. I am not very optimistic about this.
I think people need to lower their sights where holidays are concerned. Spend your money in this country when you're allowed to. It was no longer a safe world, even before this virus came along and going back to the air travel status quo ante isn't good for the planet anyway.
Nope, I will be going abroad as soon as I'm able. I love this country but there's something about a European holiday that sets me up for the year.
I agree. I've got to go anyway to see my parents. I won't be going anywhere in the UK if I can help it. Spent enough time here over my 50 odd years
Anyone whose happy to holiday in the UK, come back and tell me that when it’s August, it’s banging it down and you’ve spent all your money in slot machines
I've got a week in Cornwall booked in late June / early July and I have to decide whether to pay the balance this week. They aren't cancelling it so I will lose the deposit if I don't go but if I do and nothing is open then it's a very long way to go to spend the week doing very little.
I would cut my losses and lose the deposit, you pay full then the place goes bust? Bye bye cash. Even if it’s open the distancing in place will massively affect where you go/what you can do
Yep, that scenario has also crossed my mind. I'm almost certainly going to cancel but I'm gutted because I was really looking forwards to it. Part of me wants to risk it but it's a lot of money and others are coming with me so their money too.
Will air travel safety be compromised too? I mean planes are pretty much continuously on the move usually, and maintained at specific intervals... has there ever been such a time where all planes have been grounded for a prolonged time? I can think of 9-11 but that was a day or two... I mean I had to go out and start my car the other day, the battery was low, and the breaks took a few harsh stops to clear the rust and work right. As for holidays.... Elsecar by the sea sounds good...
I think when the planes do fly again the risk of flying wont be a lot different - but its going to be a lot more expensive I expect and it will be some time before anything like normality returns to airports not for a couple of years at least I cant see me doing a foreign holiday this year - and am not at all sure I will be skiing next winter either. It would be nice to be able to go somewhere in the UK this summer though - or at least be able to do daytrips from home
