According to expert research repeated heading of footballs can lead to brain damage. Story here http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football...otballs-laws-head-oblivion-concussion-expert/ I dont know how I feel about this. One one hand we definitely dont want players suffering brain damage but on the other hand a game where for example heading the ball was treated in the same way as handling it would be a completely different game to the one we all enjoy today. What I do know is the suggestion made in the report "Talking in specific detail about football for the first time, Omalu is calling for a total ban on heading below the age of 18 and, for children beneath the age of 12, lighter plastic balls and a modified “kick-ball” version of the game that minimises collisions." will never work. Whilst youngsters are watching todays top players heading the ball they are not going to want to play a game where this isnt allowed
How many actual cases are there of former footballers suffering brain damage due to heading a ball? I don't know any.
Ridiculous. Same as anything else, if you think you're risking your kids health don't let them play. My kids will continue to head the ball as they're not wrapped in cotton wool and they live in the real world.
Think I saw a piece a few months ago that there was a higher than average level of cases of Alzheimer's in former footballers. Couldn't say more than that as only skinned it. What I do know, if there is some form of evidence that suggests that, and no action is taken, there will be legal cases galore in the future. Tackling is pretty non existent, diving is constant, surely not much longer til all contact is stripped from the game
Jeff Astle is a case in point - though its hard to prove as people get Dementia who have never been near a football. The researcher claims that it affects lots of footballers - though there doesnt seem to be any real evidence presented in the torygraph article, but there are many footballers who headed balls day in day out who seem fine
Freedom is about taking your own risks, no one is forcing you to be a boxer or head a football or anything else.
My grandma had Alzheimer's years ago but never headed a football in her life. She was mint at prison rules murderball though.
