Those that have the facility to do so i'd have thought. If you only have so many season ticket holders and a couple of thousand on day footfall and a large area to accommodate away support then it makes sense.
I’ve always found it curious we built such a big stand, bigger than the ponty, and for the majority of its use, have almost exclusively given it to away fans
How many teams have a bigger away end than home end?? Dennis saw £ signs but it was a disaster building that stand the size it is. If we ever get to prem we should chuck away fans in corner of west and have north for home fans too. Be great to have home fans in both ends....
The last time i checked it out the match day revenue of premier league clubs accounted for between 7 and 13% of their total revenue ( think burnley's was 7% and Man Utd 13%). So yes the size of the crowd has become much less significant in the prem.
I think they said they had to build it that big to accommodate the offices , gym, changing rooms, physio rooms etc built within it. Its a white elephant really with 2,000 seats too many.
You can’t just shove away fans in the West as not surprisingly it’s not fit for disabled access. We were possibly a pen conversion away from going back to the Prem. The north turnstiles would have then been maintained and the stand split into two, allowing around 18000 home fans. No qualms from me for building it
People are quick to forget just how inadequate the away end was before the North Stand was built. It had about 2,000 uncovered seats. The North Stand has been filled by Chelsea, Villa, Newcastle, Wednesday, Leeds, Wolves and others. Next season clubs like Derby, West Brom, Hull and Forest could fill it if they're going for promotion. We filled it ourselves just before Wembley in 2000. Some clubs have filled it a few times. Every club that brings more than 2,000 fans will be putting more money into Oakwell than would be the case if it hadn't been built. To say it's a disaster or white elephant insults the improvements that have been made to the ground since the Taylor Report.
I think the building of that stand had an impact in negative ways. Obviously we went into admin not many years later, but it wasn’t the cause, but it did drain money. But the negatives for me are it’s scale and how it changed the orientation of the ground. Atmosphere of a huge away following in one place. Atmosphere of a small following and the ground effectively having just 2 stands. Players coming out of a corner with away fans around, not home. I’d hope it’s paid for itself with a smattering of big crowds, but looking back, it’s scale was too big, and it may have been better developing the west stand together with a more simple cheaper away end to follow
