Every time there is one it amazes me just how unprepared people (and governments) are for one. Florida have run out of time to evacuate and now people are being told of seek shelter wherever they can. Wooden houses in a tornado area are not the best idea are they. And for a country with such a history of tornadoes and hurricanes why the hell aren't there mass shelters in every major city? They have billions to spend in bombs but won't spend money protecting lives
The evacuations are because of the flooding due to the expected storm surge, not the buildings. A mass shelter wouldn't help when they're expecting some places to be under several feet of water.
You could say the same about countries like ours building houses on flood plains. Fact is it's cheaper. Building companies sell houses on known areas of flood risk. The risk from tornadoes, even in countries the size of USA & Canada is still small - because the destructive area of tornadoes is still relatively small. To be fair to the Governing agencies in US, anyone staying in Florida, has had numerous warnings and, for whatever reason, made a decision to stay.
They've had ample time to get the fk out of there, at least a week. One question mark I have however is on the multiple heli shots of freeway traffic (now people finally realise this is real life) why they haven't opened up two lanes on the oncoming?
Friends of my daughters boyfriends family are stuck on one of the affected Caribbean islands. They've been watching American military jeeps transporting Americans all day from their hotel and nearby ones. They've seen nothing from the British Govt and are stuck at the hotel.
My boss is in Florida and he is evacuating. He's further North, so he has a little more time. He said on our weekly call that they do change all Southbound lanes to Northbound, at some point.
