I can’t get your logic tbh . Thousands of people wear club/country shirts they’ve probably only ever seen on telly . Thousands wear club/country shirts because they like the colour/design or because they were cheap or had them given. If you can’t wear a Barnsley FC shirt because your not from the town is totally up to you but I know what I would do if I wanted to wear one and I certainly wouldn’t put self restraining actions on myself.
I was born on the other side of the Penines......there I've said it! But it was Cheshire technically........ Still look out for County results. Moved to Royston when I was 12, left when I was 18 in '86.....formative/defining/ troubled years, .....came back for a year in my mid twenties but left soon after. Always Red. Usually an away shirt.
Brother in law never lived in Barnsley. (From mexbro originally) started taking him to games when he was 10. He's followed em ever since now 49. season ticket holder and now his sons/ daughter are or have been season ticket holders. They wear the shirt with pride.
Yep, I agree with this. If you attend the matches, wear the shirt regardless of where you're from. I see lots of Man united and Liverpool fans that wearing their shirts around the supermarket etc when their teams are actually playing. They look pretty stupid, but they obviously don't get it like we do. If they're not going to physically support a club, they may as well not physically support one that's in the prem.
Of course no one would pass me in the street and know where I came from or what team I had passionately supported in my youth. But for me, wearing a Barnsley shirt etc and identifying as a Barnsley man would mean I was being disloyal to my roots and to that club. I wonder how many BFC supporters living in exile would happily wear the shirt of their local team?
There used to be a stall on the market that sold good quality football shirts at very low prices. Bought many a shirt purely for the design including Lazio, Roma, Juventus, A.C. Milan, Watford and Dundee United.
If I've missed it then I apologise, but I can't recall you mentioning that you originally supported another club.
I was born and bred in Wombwell not Barnsley. We were an Urban District Council until 1974 when we got dragged into Barnsley. It has been down hill for us ever since. Wombwell has been asset stripped. We have lost 2 Markets one, relocated, on the High Street, our Swimming Baths and they even sold our Town Hall. Our local Park is a shadow of what it was in the 60s. I've been following the Reds since 1951 when Mum and Dad took me as a 6 month old.
I’m confused tbh , are you a passionate BFC fan who can’t wear the shirt because you think not coming from the town you’d feel fake ?or are you someone who BFC is a second team from your original local team sand you’d feel disloyal to them wearing it ?
That doesn’t tie in with his post though that he’s supported BFC home and away for years . But he’s also saying he feels a fraud coz he doesn’t come from the town . Imo he either doesn’t wear or he does it’s immaterial I come from the town support the club but i don’t wear the shirts as imo they’re uncomfortable.
Had lots of mates (armchair fans) made my blood boil. supporting Leeds etc in my day. But some follow em like me following tarn. Fair enough. Apart from the banter re FOOTBALL We all love the town.
Back at school I had a mate who used his part time job money to buy pretty much most of the France 98 football shirts. Even bought the Argentina one, which I can never agree with.....Their is a good back street shop about five minutes from Bloomfield Road that sell pretty random shirts. Over the years from there I got a Hearts keeper top with Strongbow on, yellow and black Boavista shirt, PSG home shirt from the Ronaldinho days amongst others.
You sure you were born and bred in wombwell. I was brought up in jump, a parish of wombwell and we all said “Mam” not Mum”
Used to travel all over in the 80s with a lad from Harrogate. Can't remember how we met him, but he'd been a Burnley fan but I don't think their lot accepted him. He used to drive us all over back in the day, and was really into it, but he's now living in Burnley and supporting them again. I'm not sure I could ever do that, in fact I know I couldn't. Talking about not being accepted, can you remember "big Al" who used to travel with us from the social club? Little quiet bloke, bit of a loner? He was a blunts fan, but they used to take the piss so he switched to watching us.
but you're not answering the question - if you moved to say Scotland and were supporting Celtic would you be happy wearing one of their shirts. If you went to say a Scotland v N Ireland match would you wear a Scotland shirt? I am a passionate supporter of one team only - BFC But I'm a proud South Walian (mixed parentage) - if I identify as a Barnsley man I feel I'm denying my heritage. Isn't this the very reason why we hate the Barnsley people who go round town in their Leeds, Man U shirts - they are denying their Barnsley heritage.
Why would I be denying my heritage? If I moved up Scotland I certainly wouldn’t wear my BFC shirt to a match but to a Glasgow shopping centre I would. I don’t hate anyone from Barnsley wearing their preferred club shirt in fact I have loads of mates from Barnsley support Wendy and I give/ get loads of stick but I don’t hate them
I have not lived in or near Barnsley for 47 years but junior Didcot Reds 1,2 & 3 all go to see the Reds when they can. As boys they only got taken to Barnsley games and it has stuck. CORY
