Because I don't like to be negative about the team. But now he's gone...

I think to a certain extent, Winnall has winged it this season. His goal tally is impressive and on occasion, his support play has been fantastic. But we all know Sam can miss as many as he scores, otherwise he'd be on 20+ before Christmas. And we know that a dip in form or injury, is always just around the corner with Sam. Given his current contract at BFC, transfer fees are pretty much negligible. Personally, I think 4 months goal-scoring service has more value than 500k, but I can appreciate the club and others thinking otherwise. Especially, if he doesn't want to play for us and if there is already a plan in place to replace him immediately. Then half a mill becomes useful reinvestable cash, rather than taxable profit.

At 26, Sam realistically has one more good move left in him. He's never going to set the premier league on fire, let's face it. He probably knows that as well and that is success as a striker has been dependent often on the quality of his team mates at BFC. He's been given an opportunity to earn his money, while his legs are relatively still good and his stock on a high. He knows that chance would soon disappear, if he was to get seriously injured or hit a 2 month dry spell. His reputation just isn't big enough to carry him through such situations, without his earning potential plummeting.

People talk about a lot of a footballers short career and how it could all be over very quickly. Less about these small windows of opportunity, which are equally as fleeting, if not more so. And if you are a modestly talented, jobbing goalscorer like Super Sam, you have to grab them it both hands, while it's going begging.

And if it's any consolation to anyone, I reckon we've already had his best form at this level. I reckon part of him knows that might be true, but 18k a week will get ease that pain when he's warming the bench at Hilsborough...

Conor is a very different fish. But I'll see how that pans out, before giving it much thought... :)

He could've moved to a bigger, better club than Wednesday, talking about opportunity. Brentford would've been better.

To be fair to Wednesday, its a shorter commute than Brentford :) Probably the only advantage though.

I agree with every word of that. I'd even say 'absolutely bang on' if I wasn't slightly unsure what that means nowadays!

    That is a great post.

Winnall did wing it for a while last season, but he did not look good out there. LJ's fault.

And his support play has never been fantastic. It's been a hell of a lot better this season, but even so quite a few opposition attacks have arisen from his being caught in possession or from him simply misdirecting or underhitting passes.

He can strike a ball better than he passes one. If that makes sense.

    Great post though.

pretty much sums up my thoughts except the support play bit, it did cross my mind that he wanted to move while his form was holding up, Connor won't have that problem
