I know "its only a friendly".. but their no mugs. Well in reds.. Well done to all the fans that made it across .. Not like us mambe pambe stay at home tw@ts
Must say, been impressed with the standards of football in Germany. Would we say that their 2nd tier is on a par with our Championship.? As we've commented in a separate thread, they held a very strong Norwich team to a 2-2 draw, so for a young squad still getting to know how each other play, a 3-2 away win is an extremely pleasing scoreline.
Looks like our game against Bielefeld today was played in their main Stadium, whereas their recent friendly against Norwich appears to have taken place on their training pitch. I wonder why that was.? The training pitch looked to be a little bumpy, which probably prevented the Canaries from playing their usual game and possibly proved to be a leveller in terms of not being able to dominate play. Certainly looks as though opting to play us on a flat pitch with wide open space backfired on our hosts because we look to have played some nice stuff. Given that a lot of our lads are still bedding in, we've got to be happy with our performances thus far. Acid test will be how they perform against Sheffield United. Win that and I think we can start to feel a certain amount of optimism going into the season proper.
Earlier on in the week the BBS sages indicated it was League 1 standard. We've won two matches against 2nd tier German opposition, ergo the standard is clearly championship at the very least. I think that's how these things work.
