Academic and historical based research is of the consensus that the conflict in Northerrn Ireland was not religiously motivated. That is not to say “some” violence was specifically directed at one community or another, but they weren’t fighting over the primacy of the Pope or the issue of transubstantiation. Which strictly speaking is what motivates some Muslims who turn to terrorism - it can be justified by them through the word of God as written down by Mohammed. Point me to the bit in the New Teatament which justifies any of the deaths in Northern Ireland or anyone convicted of a terror offence therein who used the Bible to justify it.

 

Alot of the stuff towards the latter days of the trouble was more to do with drugs and turf wars as it was to do with religon and unity of ireland.

You should have a look at how many former commanders on both sides are now extremely wealthy.

The point about 'proper racists being hard to find' suggests that you have a clear definition of what constitutes racism that may enlighten our own. So we're all on the same page, could you share it with the group?

 

I think someone is racist when they don’t like people from another race.
For example - a black person hating whites - which is common in many countries.
Or an oriental person hating anything which isn’t from their country - which is common in at least one country.
But white people not liking southern Asian people is not racist in the pure sense - because white people and southern Asians are the same race.
Not many will realise that whites and native Australians are the same race.

 

It's striking that your go-to example for racism is the absolute reverse of the most notable, and vicious, expression of racism.
