At the very least we are entering a league which has not 'lost its soul' as much as the championship . Less of the nonsencical Americanisation. You go to Fulham the fans all have paper clappers. Reading have a synchronized drum beat after they score. Brighton had a fancam. In League 1 fans don't get this 'entertainment' because it's simply not needed or traditional. The fans in general have a better attitude to the opposition. The announcement of 300 Barnsley fans at Gillingham was greeted with a standing ovation by their main stand, where as Brighton laughed at us for bringing 800. Much less of the 'teams like' sort of thing such as Villa fans crying they drew against Ipswich too. Clubs are just more authentic and closer to their original roots. You won't see any club brandishing a Thai tuna mans name on their main stand or £50k a week players trudging off the pitch without clapping their supporters. Perhaps in some ways this malarkey will not be so bad.
Good points. The only thing that worries me is we have a section of fans who will be upset if we don’t beat “teams like” ...., as we will move to being a bigger fish in the smaller pond
Fair point. This new manager may hit the ground running. But if he doesn’t - but the signs are there - then we need to give him time. Unfortunately under Morais the signs were never there. Even when we won it was looked on as fantastic but things could easily have gone against us.
Don't think I've agreed with OP posts before, but I have to say some of my favourite away days have been in league one.
‘£50k a week players trudging off the pitch without clapping their supporters. ‘ Sunderland might still have a few
Good, positive post. I’m certainly looking forward to being less of an underdog this season (without getting all ‘teams like...’) and winning a few more games. Well, hopefully anyway.
The irony of Brighton taking the piss out of our following when they managed a massive 1,400 to us when top of the 2nd division for the first time in nearly 40 years was not lost on me. We'd have taken double that in the same position, with smaller home crowds. Looking forward to next season.
Good post. Let's take the positives out of our new home, hope it's temporary and try to help ourselves to one or two ornaments for the mantlepiece while we're there.
Oh .. and don't forget the hooliganism, you seem get a bit more of that in the lower leagues (can't afford the Police I guess)
Speaking of which, are there any games where our beloved syp will make us kick off at 7 in the morning this year?
I think if we have a good start, playing good football there will be few complaining. If we get thrashed 3 - nil at Accrington, there will be many chelping, like Wednesday fans about us "being a big club in this division". Suspect SYP will find any excuse to mess around our kick off times. Games like Sunderland for a start. Having the council as co ground owners has it's downside, when it comes to safety issues. Overall I'm optimistic, but not over expectant. Been watching since 1974. Usually we only have 2/3 dire seasons in a row (Iley era excepted), before green shoots appear. For my mind we've had one & a half. Let's hope the new manager can hit the ground running, with the support of the board / CEO in getting the right players in next season. We've had 3 terrible transfer windows, a fourth & a lot of folks will take their bats home. I agree with the OP there are some great fans / teams in L1 & more of a level playing field money wise.
Always loved going to Grimsby, Stockport on a Friday night(if the match was ***** you could watch the planes flying over) Tranmere.. places like that. Been to Spotland and Gresty Road a hell of a lot more times than Villa park or Newcastle.. Brought up on it, loved it... But refuse to pay top dollar to watch it these days... after see how much aways are next season, be interesting
They can certainly afford heavy handed policing in Chesterfield worst ever experience with the coppers there the other year. So bad that they actually started most of the trouble.
I’m still bitter about that, the way they treated my kids was a disgrace and I’ll hate those fuckers forever. Not that I’m one to bear a grudge or anything.
