Lewin Nyatanga will return to Derby County when his loan spell at Barnsley expires next month and the Welsh international could kick-start his Rams career under new manager Paul Jewell. The 19-year-old defender is one of five players currently out on loan but Jewell is planning to bring them back to boost numbers in his squad. He also wants to run a check on the five. "We will be bringing Lewin back and I want to give every player the opportunity to show me they are good enough to be here," said Jewell. "Things can change very quickly in football but I would like them all back to have a good look at them. "We are short of players at the moment and if the five out on loan were here they would have a chance of being in the squad to face Newcastle tomorrow.? Nyatanga and striker Jon Macken are with Barnsley until after the Tykes' New Year's Day clash at Scnuthorpe. Barnsley boss Simon Davey was keen to keep both at Oakwell. Burton-born Nyatanga has made 23 appearances for Barnsley this season while Macken, 30, has played nine times but has yet to score. The loans of Mo Camara and Bob Malcolm at Norwich and Queens Park Rangers are also up on January 1. Left-back Camara, 32, has made six appearances for Norwich. Midfielder Malcolm, 27, has figured seven times for QPR. Michael Johnson completes a three-month stay at Sheffield Wednesday after today's home game against Watford. Jewell will be at Hillsborough to run a check on Johnson, who has been offered an 18-month deal by the Owls. The 34-year-old central defender is out of contract at Derby in the summer, as are Macken and Malcolm. Injuries are stretching Derby's squad. Andy Griffin is out of the Newcastle game with a calf injury, David Jones is struggling with a groin problem and Matt Oakley has a thigh strain, though the skipper is expected to be fit. Stephen Pearson is back in training following a dead leg but Andy Todd is due to see another specialist with his long-standing back and hamstring problem. Jewell has dismissed speculation linking the Rams with Southampton striker Grzegorz Rasiak, Leeds United forward Jermaine Beckford and Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill. "I have had no contact with any of those clubs or players," said Jewell.

Aye Hopefully Jewell informed Davey earlier and Davey has been looking around for replacements. Shame, but that's what happens when you have loanees, move on.
No great shakes hopefully Nyatana would be the biggest loss but I would hope that Davey has something up his sleeve. Foster will move to CH, Van whatshisface or Hassel to RB or we get an experienced head in there. As for Macken I have mixed feelings. I like him as a footballer but cant see him contributing significantly to the goals tally and he lacks sharpness and pace. I would though have liked to have seen him paired with Mossto for a few games
Well Derby are going down and so Jewell has nothing to lose by giving them a chance. I have confidence in our manager that replacements will be found for them both. Both are good players, but both are rated too highly by some of our fans. We will now have room for a striker who can score and a centre half who doesn't find himself at fault for goals we conceed from set pieces
