The only time I went into an office was when the manager called me in for riding belt and fon me a fiver.
That’s generally been my view, but now I’m not so sure. There are so many businesses only one crisis away from failure, and this has been one massive crisis. Was there enough work for everyone that wanted it during the Great Depression?
I think that short term it'll be a bit tight but medium to longer term I think it'll be fine. I suspect that alot of overseas manufacturing especially in medicines will be brought back to these shores. The crisis has shown one thing, that the UK cant rely on last minute supply chains and reliance on the far east.
been there and done that,Barnburgh North intake, newhill seam and a right rollocking for riding under the transformers
we had this out with the government when they were shutting the pits and other manufacturing but they wouldnt listen, nowt will change now pal,too many at the top in this country with interests in the far east
If your customers require a halfway decent level of security then you cant be working from home even if you are on a secure connection.
What is the current UK policy? Our UK site have a few folks on furlough , is that policy due to end soon?
Got it slightly wrong. https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...anges-to-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme
But there are so many other ways to monitor productivity. If staff toss it off at home then so be it, but they would just end up out of a job. If my staff produce to the level I require I couldn’t care less if they sit at their desk for 3 hours or 12. I think there will be a huge shift towards home working as a result of this, and that’s a great thing. Employers have realised that they can trust their employees. I think it creates better work life balance allowing parents to see their kids more, and it’s much better for the environment.
arguably you’re at work all the time now with iPhones etc. I think it’s a bit of a mindset thing and the pros much outweigh the cons.
Not necessarily. Worked for Government, Energy, Transport & Financial companies from home 2+ days per week. Colleagues have worked for police split home/office. Defence would have been 5 days on site but *I* haven't worked for them. It should be part of the security on-boarding for the company but a secure VPN connection to your office has very little risk over an office connection.
It's true. I finish work at 4pm travel back to Rotherham and my enjoyable shift starts until I go to bed
He clearly doesn’t. There are just as many distractions in an office. Phones ringing. People walking around talking. Yes, I have the TV on all day while working from home. I get a lot more done in less time. Whether you’re at home or in an office, self motivation is a necessity. If you’re unable to motivate yourself then an office job isn’t for you.
The problem is the cost. If you make it here it costs much more than making it in the far east - or Africa as a new manufacturing base. This could double, triple or even more, the cost to customers.
