The Scousers really do have a keen sense of humour. I used to go to Liverpool in the mid-70's when my then girlfriend was at teachers training college at Kirkby and my best mate Dr Ken Sprakes was doing a degree at Liverpool Uni. We were on a bus once and as we passed Goodison Park, several passenger got on their knees and stated bowing towards the stadium. Another time, we passed a Church and on a billboard in the grounds it said " What would you do if Christ came to Liverpool.?". Underneath a wag had scrawled " Move St John onto the wing and play him at centre forward."
Don’t think it’s on the itinerary of real ale and craft beer bars we’ve got lined up but you never know
For 30 years I've stood up against the disgusting lies used to besmirch Liverpool supporters for what happened in 89. However, I also went to Anfield in 82. Not all of us came home. Many came home in a much worse state than they left. We were brilliant that night. As we tried to get home the people of Liverpool tried to hurt us, maim us, kill us. Men, women and children. Hundreds of them. Maybe thousands. And I'm sorry, but they did.
The toxicity of the atmosphere in the return leg doesn't concern me. Liverpool fans were free to return to their home city without having to fear for their lives. If they wanted trouble I'm sure they found it, but they weren't hunted down like we were.
Concerned me as an 11 year old - atmosphere was a result of the attack. I'm not condoning the attack or the behaviour of their fans but the atmosphere was hostile - my boss, a Liverpool fan, has commented that it was a daunting place to go as an away fan - I explained the reason why there was that feeling - he's younger and didn't realise. The atmosphere in the cup game in mid 80's was also bad - they were stoned on the railway bridge - remember watching that from the bus station.
Like all clubs liverpool have moronic fans. Maybe heightened as they have more fans than most teams. My family support liverpool apart from myself and my dad who are super reds fans, my brother is a big fan and a good lad. I also have not bought the shitty Sun since 1989 and will never do. Bugger Alton Towers. The fans are passionate and loyal in the most and I do want them to win the prem just for my mother and brother really. I enjoy watching liverpool and city as they play the best football in the prem. 11 points is alot but doubt klopp will count his chickens im sure newcastle under keegan were like 14 or 15 ahead of ManUre back in the day.
Free beer for a year to anyone on here who has seen us lose at Anfield and has a programme from the game (security if my maths are wrong but they would have to be 100)
They certainly did . Don't forget the fan who had his back decorated with a Stanley knife . Had it been a Millwall / Chelsea fan (of the time) it would have been front and back page news but I only saw on page 7 of a rag . Teflon fans .
That night was absolutely disgusting. And it wasn't all that much better when we beat them in the Premier League.
I've always disliked Liverpool, but not because of people from the city, more because of the locally based Liverpool fans. I just don't understand the mentality of people from this neck of the woods going over there, despite having no family connections. I don't know who are the worst, them or the idiots that don't actually go to games but proudly wear the shirts. Seems were a football mad country, but not mad about watching our local teams, or even watching football in person in many cases. My Liverpool 'supporting' mate from Harrogate will be unbearable if they win the league, despite never having been to a single game in his life, but the way things are going, the relief of our relegation will hopefully take the edge off his crowing.
