Been reading the blunts boards and as usual, some are reluctant to count us as a local rival. Their only one being Wednesday, and vice versa. I find that strange and it goes against grain for me, because the more rivalry the more interest created. As a young reds fan I loved the excitement of all the local derbies. Travelling on the special, singing our hearts out in the safety of the police escorts and the electric atmosphere of the night games at Oakwell. It must be incredibly dull to play down everything apart from 2 games a season, but each to their own I suppose.
The more they say we're not a rival the more I'm convinced they think we are, Obviously the city derby is their big one which is obvious probably followed closely by Leeds, us, Rotherham,Donny etc. I would say our Biggest is either fowls or leeds depending on opinions obviously. But blades, Rotherham, Donny are close behind , obviously the big clubs are the biggest games in cup or whatever the likes of manure, spurs and arsenal etc, but make no bones about it dem blades know this one counts
They're too big and illustrious to count little old Barnsley as a rival. We should just feel privileged to be in the same league as them.
I think Wednesday are nearest and there are lots of Wednesday fans in our town. Leeds are the main rivals for people in the north of our town. We haven't played united as much as the other teams mentioned However these are my opinions and I'm sure others will give you theirs.
Sheffield clubs just go nose to nose with each other. They don't see any other rival. Even though Leeds has traditionally been the main rival of both of them. Any player or manager who made good in Sheffield was poached by Leeds. There's a shed load of them. Jones, Wilkinson, flying pig. Edwards, Cantona, Sebella, Chapman ..... and the man himself Tony Currie
Thing is - while they are knocking lumps off each other - they are not bothered about the wider world. Have you heard - 'mind the gap' being said by Sheffield fans? If United finished 1st in the 1st division and Wednesday finished 4th from bottom of the Championship - then Wednesday fans would think they had a more successful season because they finished higher than United. That's how daft things are in Sheffield. They see nothing beyond the city boundary. They couldn't care less about Barnsley - and don't see us in any shape or form as a rival. We may as well be a London club for all they care. Main reason for this is - loads of people from Barnsley district support the Sheffield clubs. No one from Sheffield, unless they have ties to Barnsley, supports Barnsley.
It all depends on who you talk to; Wednesday and United will always view each other as their biggest rivals, always have done always will do Tend to find it's dependant on who you talk to regarding Wednesday as their 2nd biggest, Us, Leeds or on the odd occasion Rotherham United whereas United get on well with Rotherham, hence Wednesday calling them 'Minnie Blunts' and stuff like that. Personally for me, Wednesday is always the biggest game of the season when we play them in the League, Leeds I don't really mind, United I dislike but don't particularly care about. Donny always got on my nerves but thats because they think they're a massive club despite spending most of recent history bobbing between the Conference and League 1
I grew up with them and still live with them now, Leeds fans are all over Normy to be honest but there are a few Tykes fans here as well.
