You had me worried then , I thought you meant we were re- signing Brian Mahoney who we originally signed for a fee of about £10,000 from Huddersfield & trust me, at 10 grand , we were robbed ! Minds you , 10 grand in them days was a fair wedge

Brian Mahoney was signed for tactical reasons. When defending free kicks near our box, he could act as a five man defensive wall on his own. This freed up 4 players to stand on the half way line ready for a quick break.

If he went down in the box it registered on the Richter scale.

These were our heroes as kids.... him, Winstanley, Eddie Loyden (scored at Leicester in an FA Cup replay), Pat Howard, Bob Earnshaw, Les Lea, etc etc.
Think about what we were in those days compared with today. We are in heavenly bliss nowadays.

Remember him netting a screamer at Rotherham, my first ever away game. Think it was on Boxing Day in 73. Apart from that he was garbage from what I can remember....lol

I was there. Got thumped in the face into the bargain by a Rotherham fan trying to knick my scarf. He didn't manage it though.

His size also shielded him from the ref's eyes. Once remember him knocking the ball down with his hand then smashing it into the net. Couldn't believe it when the ref allowed the goal, we were all laughing our heads off. :D

The fee was based on the value of his massive sideburns. £5,000 for each one was reported :)

Stepped up the chase for the 2 loan targets now. If the Manzala deal had dropped as hoped, we’d have only taken one of these.

Whether this means we’ll go in for both now I don’t know. Ideally we wouldn’t have wanted 2 loan wingers and then the loan striker were chasing.

Obviously Manzala wouldn’t have been the only permanent wing target but he was definitely the main one.

It’s catch 22 for the club. In terms of numbers we could easily pull players in from the lower league permanently and say there we’ve signed a winger.

But with Manzala who’s been recognised as a quality acquisition it’s a balancing act as to whether you wait for the better option at risk of collapse and getting no one or bring in a less quality player or loan earlier.

The problem is we got stung with this with Mcburnie and as a result have been running with at least one striker short all season.

Although some think I make out like I do(maybe I do), I do not know everything. We could be trying to thrash a deal out now for another £1 million plus target with view to getting a back up on loan as planned before.

I just hope the panic button isn’t hit on the back of 2 high profile transfer breakdowns in Mcburnie and Manzala.

I get the frustration from everybody, but we are where we are. January is notoriously hard to bring quality in. Everyone in football says the same thing. Add to that, our league position, and the harsh reality is that quality players we're trying to bring in on permanents, will be wary of where they might be next season. So that leaves us back in a very precarious position - wait for quality that may fall through, look lower, or look at loans.

It's incredibly difficult. If it weren't, all our targets would have signed. I'm sure it's not through lack of effort on our part.

We seem to lose out on one good acquisition each window. Remember the Morsy deal falling through a year ago?

At least it does seem that the club is targeting the right quality players with such deals. They might not always go ahead, but they were never unrealistic targets.

If the other target is Kaikai which I assume it is, then I am sure he is out of contract in the summer so maybe a permanent deal could be done with that one? Even if its a loan with view to buy in summer.
