His wife was a Rep for a well known furniture supplier and she used to visit some of the colleagues where I worked. She knew I supported the Reds so we always exchanged pleasantries whenever she popped in. When Martin first left Barnsley she told us that he was really disappointed because he loved the Club and as a family they were settled in the area. Big dilemma for the lad really, does he stay at Oakwell safe in the knowledge that he probably has a secure future and his wife is settled in her job, or does he take the Cheltenham job ( if he's offered it of course) knowing that at some point in the future he will probably get the sack.
Difficult choice, must be tempting to go into senior management, but on the other hand who knows if the job here might open up for him down the line?
I think she’s still is a rep for them. He’s got a great family - grounded people who are down to earth. Mrs D is switched on and has a successful career herself. It’d be a big decision for him to go down there. I can’t honestly see him doing it yet with his kids being still young. But who knows!
Of course that was exactly the same dilemma that hecky had. I seem to remember him mentioning that the move to Barnsley manager would sadly ultimately finish his time at the club. It must be a very difficult decision to make when your already in a job where you’re happy, valued and rewarded.
Different dilemma to the Hecky one. He left us for a bigger club and didn't have to change anything else in his life. Martin and his family are honoury Yorkies. He's done his best to keep his family in this area, so clearly loves it. He could be in the running for a promotion with us one day like we've done for years with the likes of Davey and Hecky. He's highly thought of in a secure position. Or he could move back south, be sacked eventually like what happens to most managers, wife find a new job, kids uprooted to new schools etc. I reckon if he got offered it he would still pick to stay with us.
Sorry I didn’t mean that. I meant when hecky stepped up from youth coach to first team coach he recognised that he’d set the timer off for his departure from the club one way or another.
