Just in case anyone hasn’t yet watched it and are interested in seeing the film, Friday at 9pm, Sony movie channel. Definitely worth a watch.

I watched it last year. What struck me was that they also insisted in recruiting an old head to help the youngsters on the pitch. We arent copying it really

Tbf Hammill wasn’t exactly a spring chicken .
I think if the right player becomes available we’ll sign him but we have to be careful of journey men they could disrupt the whole ambience at the club imo.

Watched it a while ago. Not sure why billy beane got so much credit for it. Fair enough he was general manager and took the risk to go with the idea of using stats. But it wasn’t his idea and he wasn’t the stat man who picked out the players.

Well, if the film is to be believed, he was the driving force who made it happen, it's not who has the ideas, it's not who picks the players, it's the guy who makes it happen and has the balls to keep doing it even when it looks like a failure that deserves teh plaudits.

He didn’t pick the players though the stats guy did, who in real life wasn’t a shy geek. Like I said he had the ball to go with the idea to use stats but it wasn’t his idea

G'day Marlon. Agree about journeymen, but such a rigid recruitment policy could be a self fulfilling prophecy. Agents and scouts prop players to us, we keep saying no, they're too old, we don't get offered any over a certain age. Interesting to see what comes of this rumour re 27 year old striker. I think strikers and goalies mature later anyway and if he had 18 months of success he's still well shy of 30 so still saleable asset, which is what I think club is interested in

The book by Michael Lewis is also a brilliant read. Not normally Lewis' subject matter, usually his stuff is about 'Wall Street' and financial chicanery.
