Last night watching The Women’s France v Norway, there was an incident of another ball joining play. The play was deep in the French half, and had Norway pretty much possession in a dangerous area... a drop ball was the result. The referee then told the Norway attacker to move away, and then bounced the ball in front of the French defender, for her to clear..

The commentator then explained that a new rule meant that drop balls were uncontested...

My question is, why? I know as a kid, I gained some decent bruising from drop ball situations. But I can’t recall a drop ball incident in a proffesional game, where judgement has not been implemented well when it comes to which team gets gets the ball. If there is not a clear team in possession, why can’t they battle for it?

There is a new rule for next season about drop balls being uncontested, but the team who last touched the ball would have it to retain possession from the same position.

I think the new rules apply now don’t they didn’t they come in on 1st June? with the new rules all drop balls are uncontested with the side who last touched the ball being given the ball unless it’s in the penalty area. I guess the ref decided that the French were the last to touch it.

Possibly, just seemed like a lost opportunity for Norway. Not sure who touched it last, but it was by no means under control...

So why don’t they just change drop ball to a free kick?

Still getting my head around why the French lass jumped in off the ground, two-footed, and got a pen for her efforts!!

Just seen that penalty incident and am confused defender gets to the ball and plays it away and just touches the French player who has jumped in with both feet and after a VAR review they give a pen I just don’t understand how

Maybe the VAR assistant fancied the french player and thought he'd like to give her one........

They should drop the ball inbetween the dugouts and let the coaching staff have a go at it
