He's liked a tweet saying 'let's get this straight, robbo didn't and doesn't want to leave but they haven't offered him a new contract. What would you do?'

Id post the picture but it seems much more difficult to do so on this board.

It doesn't surprise me at all that we've not offered him one, it just seems to be something we do.... yano, let premier league potential players leave for **** all.

I think the complicated answer is yes. We are still paying him what we agreed when he left Halifax though so not surprising he is leaving.

The way I see it is if we offered him a new three year deal he'd be likely to sign it BUT at the end of it as a 30 year old The Plan says that he won't have any resale value. Therefore, we should sell him NOW to get the value out of him

Same as scowen, hourihane, winnall. I won't be getting a new season ticket until this ludicrous transfer policy of developing players to sell to other clubs for a moderate fee so their value can rocket ends. It really isn't that difficult and we will get nowhere taking lower league players, turning them into stars and letting their contracts run down so we only make a modest profit instead of the gigantic fees that float about from even lower league clubs. Awfully managed transfer policy when the front end staff are among the best in the country. We would be a very wealthy club indeed with a tiny amount of competence.

Do you see his value as £3.5m? Really? Let's see what Birmingham sell him for.

At what point did I say I'd stop supporting the club? If you're happy with the total lack of ambition and ground hog day transfer policy that's your business.

    Well some are saying £5.5

To get this in context, he's 27 years old and unlikely to be sold on for a bigger fee. In addition, he's got 12 months left on his contract

    I think 3.5 to 5.5 is reasonable.

As for the other players we are signing, I think we are planning to sell them at a similar point in their contracts and the truly exceptional ones or those who develop quicker will go after one year thus getting more money

I understand what you're saying but surely we should be making an exception for him? He's one of our greatest ever center backs. Plus he signed for a couple of quid, so is there any need to sell?

Disappointed in this, I really am. In not sure I like the idea of having next to no experience at the back, especially at this level. You can get away with it at league 1 level.

who's to say he would have signed a contract that we were able to offer knowing that there was interest from more affluent clubs?

he was hardly going to sign on the same terms that we offered him when he left halifax?

if true though it's disappointing we didn't try in my opinion

I'm extremely puzzled as to why we didn't make him an improved offer. As far as I'm aware he's not even one of our better paid players, due to the situation you have outlined above. Which as he's club captain is a little odd that we didn't, to say the least

Should we not also reward on field performance? Should we pretty much force out local lads who want to play for us? He would probably have signed a new contract if offered one. New season same old Barnsley. People will possibly now start believing Conor when he said that no one was offered contracts last summer.

Of course we should have tried. I don't think it would have taken much to persuade him to be fair.

You didn't but I presume that from the post, not buying a season ticket means you wont be wanting to go and watch regular games. However I think it should be noted that we have always been a selling club. We can go back to the Hirst, McCarthy, Ward and even earlier days and see that we are more a selling club. The difference now is that we have built this into our plan, bring 'young and ambitious' players in, let them help our team compete in (and win recently) competitions and giving them and us an opportunity to progress in their careers where we keep good income coming in. Right now its working. Unless we have an owner who can bankroll a £20M transfer and salary fund a season, then I don't see too many other options. But other than abandoning ship on a ST, what other options do you see and how do we fund them?

The question is going into the first day of the season is £3.5-5.5m that lets be reyt won't come anywhere near to being reinvested sat in the bank or Marc Roberts the top quality championship centre back captaining the team better for the club long term? We are dismantling the small amount of proven quality from the already relegation quality team from the second half of last season. I'm shocked more aren't concerned. Paul heckingbottom will be the only reason we're not relegated next season and he won't put up with this incompetence forever. I'm more or less convinced those higher at the club would rather we be in league 1

You would have thought when we extended Angus contract , that we would have tried with Marc

If that's the case, then surely he'd have signed a new deal, even just a one-year extension, so the club could, potentially, get even more money for him in six months time.

I don't believe everything footballers like on twitter. Do we really think he'd stay here for £6k a week, when he's probably earning about £20k at Birmingham?
