Those lifts absolutely ruin the design and make it look quite ugly

Completion by late 2021. So near on another two full years of the present chaotic arrangement? How many fans will we have left by then?

There are no changes to the last time it was on the front page of the Chronicle. This is just a re-hash of the story because it’s being approved next week.

Pretty essential for disabled users though.

Not really. There were alternatives that they've ruled out.

One was to have a longer incline that would have been suitable as a ramp. Much cheaper (by around a million) but meant taking up more space.
One was to have a ramp that doubles back on itself in the area that the lift is in. Again around £1m cheaper and taking up no more space.
One was the furnicula lift that kept the more aesthetic design but cost more.
One was to have a lower bridge which would have been much much cheaper. The only reason not to have it lower is so that network rail can extend the platforms under the bridge if they ever want to in the future instead of extending them in the other direction.

Getting into Tuscan Village territory now. After about 15 years they'll decide not to build a bridge and put some cladding on the old BHS building.

I wish they would put some cladding on it or knock it down. What an ugly building it is

The funicular lifts in the original design did look much better, however, the cost to install and maintain were through the roof which meant the design had to be changed.

There isn’t enough space on the interchange side to accommodate ramps without seriously impacting the design so options are limited.

And I think given the track record with the rest of the town centre it would be fair to assume it won't even be ready by then.

I’m not sure ramps are better than lifts. If you’re self propelling then navigating a long ramp can get tiring quickly and they are of course much more dangerous than lifts in very wet or icy weather.

    Exactly.
Did anyone else witness the Stoke fans wandering about aimlessly at Jumble Lane Crossing trying to find away to the ground ???
The current bridge is an ugly embarrassment to Barnsley.

The new proposed bridge looks fabulous.

In the meantime - Barnsley has to suffer the ugly not fit for purpose Mecanno Set bridge.
Another example of this Labour controlled council dumping on the people of Barnsley.
This issue on its own should lose Labour thousands of votes at the next General Election.

For the 867275727 thousandth time network rail closed the crossing not Barnsley council.
It was closed when it was to meet network rails legal obligations.
A new bridge cannot appear instantly.
A larger temporary bridge is not possible.

Give me your alternative to the current temporary bridge.

I think you'll find the tory scum have been dumping on Barnsley every opportunity it can. Are you a bit dense?

    totally agree JD -
self-propelling a wheelchair up or down a ramp is hard and possibly dangerous work. (a friend who uses a wheelchair says that going down a ramp is more problematic than going up!)
It shouldn't be assumed that all wheelchair users have 'full' strength in their arms.

Do you seriously believe that a loss of Labour votes would be a positive for places like Barnsley?

For the 867275727 + 1 time ........ a decision like this to build a bridge CANNOT be taken without input from Barnsley Council.
And, if as you say this has nothing to do with Barnsley Council - then why is it that Barnsley Council are releasing images of the new bridge that they have designed ???

Did you look up how much your mate Boris spent on a bridge in London that never got built ?
