There was evidence that the Iranian ship was taking oil to Syria so it was seized while assurances were given. There was no contravention of any Iranian sanctions, they threatened to retaliate and this action by the Revolutionary Guard is just that - a retaliation to a legal seizure due to the potential breaching of EU sanctions in EU waters. The boat seized by Iran wasn't even in Iranian waters when it was seized.

Why are they sanctions preventing Iran supplying oil to Syria ? I'm not aware of any attack by Syria on the west either by a state backed army or by proxy ( terrorists ) . I really hope the seizure of said Iranian tanker wasn't at the behest of the Saudis and their terrorist friends in Syria .

    It’s an EU sanction

I'm aware what a sanction is and it's desired effects . My point is why has the EU sanctioned Syria ?

That’s my point. I can’t see the point giving Chapter and verse when a quick Google search tells you why sanctions are in place by the EU and US.

Whether you agree with them or not is a different matter though.

Well here's the UK s position regards sanctions . Seems like they have a lot of concerns .

    • concerns about a country’s internal repression of its citizens, regional instability and other human rights violations
    • concerns about the development of weapons of mass destruction
    • foreign policy and international treaty commitments, such as the imposition of European Union (EU) or United Nations (UN) trade sanctions or arms embargoes
    • concerns for the national and collective security of the UK and its allies

Concerns without evidence . I'm guessing that's how they pulled off the Iraq war.......

Well, those concerns are also shared by the EU and US. Whom all have access to high-level intel that we don’t personally.

Iraq’s history, for which we should have learnt from. That’s not an excuse to sit back and do nothing.

Wonder if Iran have any concerns about the safety of their citizens, what with us and the US having a history of bombing the hell out of any country we don't like, actually using weapons of mass destruction, as we developed them years ago, and generally killing who we please, while Iran has no such history really. Isn't it time other countries did something about us?

Because it was an agreement between the EU and the US to apply sanctions against Assad for his actions in his civil war.

They would bomb the hell out of us if they could.

After they'd obliterated Israel of course.

Good job we've got the tools and not them.

It is paramount that we keep America out of this spat. The Iranians want to embroil the US in this. This will only be resolved by diplomacy not warfare. The best person to negotiate would be Kim Darroch the ex ambassador to the US.

We have to keep hitting you with a stick because we're now scared that if we stop, we've done that much **** to you, you might retaliate.

Just to be clear, this is the same Iran currently accused of committing atrocities in Syria?Whatever our past history and thoughts on that lets not even pretend Iran has a tolerant well balanced society.
