Mi lad has had a quote from a firm & it seems reasonable but they are asking for an upfront fee of 33%, is this normal or should he avoid paying anything until the job is complete & satisfactory? Cheers in advance
I'm a self employed tradesman and I never ask for anything up front. Some do though, by way of a deposit or booking fee. It shows trust commitment on both parts. Any bona fide trader should be able to start a job without asking for payment up front. I have trade credit accounts in order to supply materials and pay for them at a later date. If I'm doing a largish job, I break it up into smaller sections and submit interim invoices to help my cashflow. If your son is going to give them a deposit, offer to do it by bank transfer and get a receipt. There is no paper trail with cash so avoid that route.
