Just watched a documentary about the great man. What a servant to the game he's been. He spoke frankly and openly about his experiences. He reminded me of Mick Mccarthy in many ways. He didn't shirk a question or dodge an answer like he didn't shirk a tackle. One of my heroes growing up watching him play for England.
What a player. I remember one of the first seasons I watched football, he scored about 200 goals from left back. Checking wikipedia it was actually 16 in 49 apps in 1990-91, but he also got 9 goals in each season either side and 10 each in 88-89 and 94-95. Imagine a left back you could regularly rely on for 8-10 goals a season?!
Also, I went to his testimonial, which was against Newcastle I believe, the year they nearly won the league. During he game, I saw Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott and Mark Crossley all score in what I think was a 6-5 win to Forest.
I recall a funny incident at oakwell when he came to take a corner and gave the ponty the old crafty waxkxrs sign near the west stand corner flag ...after they had been giving him dogs abuse most of the match As you can imagine this escalated the abuse.....he then stood there hands on hips laughing then mouthing shurrup ...... Give him his due at the end of the day he took it in fun and applauded the crowd at the end of the game .....good bloke
