Jared Bird Signs New Contract At Oakwell! Club News We are delighted to announce that Jared Bird has today signed a two-year contract extension with Barnsley Football Club. Continue reading on the official site...
I really don't think we're learning our lessons. Best case scenario, as far as I can see it: Bird starts to feature more regularly over the second half of this season, and impresses. After some hard work over the summer he starts the 2018/19 season in the first team and has turned into the new Conor Hourihane. Ever present, player of the season, etc, etc. Summer 2019, with one year's football behind him, the fact that he's only now got a year on his contract means that he's got to be sold for a knock down price to Aston Villa. He's come through the youth team and won't be on much - if we believe he can cut it in the Championship then is it beyond our ability to give him four or five years, or at least write in the option for an extra year in the club's benefit? As it is, he could be the new Messi but we'd still only get a year's proper football and £3m.
We come to an arrangement so he can leave for first team football elsewhere? As I say, he'll not be on much. But I did also suggest an option in the club's favour. For all I know it's a calculated risk, and there would be a four- or five-year contract on offer for the right player. But it seems that three years is the maximum we hand out and, as I say, that will only ever really give us a single season unless the player we sign is up to scratch already.
I imagine he wants to be earning a lot more in 5 years then he does now, so he might not have wanted to sign anything much longer. I suppose we could have increased the wage after x amount of games then after another x etc but then it becomes complicated. The fact that he only signed a new contract in the summer and he's already got an improved one then we might have learnt a lesson and not wait until the last minute to renew.
You have some crystal ball there my friend , if you can predict the future like that , could please pm me with next saturdays winning lotto numbers !
As I recall the optional extensions have all been for one year on a two year deal. Could be wrong though.
Could go differently. Just saying that if he's really good then we'll lose him early and cheaply, going on recent experience.
Good point, and I accept it. Hopefully if he does impress in the second half of this season then we'll try the same trick again next summer.
To be fair , I think the two players we have brought through ourselves & sold recently , Stones & Holgate , although the initial fees have been on the low side , the way the deals have been structured , as proven with Stones , appear to be good deals for us
We can't go handing out 5 year deals willy nilly. Especially to players who haven't even 'made it' yet.
Which is the other side of the argument (although again, I raised the possibility of further years in the club's favour). The fact remains that if he's any good then the events outlined in my first post look likely.
