A 'secret gay' footballer in the championship is planning to come out next season. Could be a wind up but he's getting a lot of support on the thread. Would not bother me at all but how do you feel it would go down? Shouldn't really be an issue in this day and age surely ....
The day it no longer needs to get a special mention is the day I'm looking forward to. Awful in this day and age that some people cant accept it
Can he play....are we signing him...….if he's a striker who scores goals get a bid in, if not good luck to the lad wi his football career
I feel it’s terrible that it’s still an issue for someone to have to be “brave” to come out. I hope whoever it is can be left to get on with their life and helps any others hiding their sexuality to come out.
find it hard to believe that anybody really cares in this day and age. Might be the circles I move in but I cannot think of one person that I know who would bat an eyelid at a footballer saying he was gay.
if he was playing for us and banging them in or a rock in defence or a solid goalie or a mid field general. Then I would give a hoot about his personal choices.
Yes to some extent. The media play a big part in it sadly. They’ve ran back page stories stating an unnamed footballer is expected to come out, on many occasions, only for nothing to come of it. I understand they’re seen as role models for a lot of young people, but I don’t understand the need for footballers to declare their sexual preferences. Do we automatically assume they’re all straight because they like to kick a ball about?
Im sure if it was s Barnsley player he would get full support from the stands. Social media twitter etc he would be advised to avoid as infortunately thats the platform where the real lowlifes hide from all over the country and give abuse, not face to face or in public - unless you are a Millwall fan.
Agree with all of this. The media seem to be praying for someone to come out so they can print a story on it. Who cares? I don’t really wanna know if any of our players are either straight or gay. Their private lives are their private lives. Anyone who has an issue with it have no place in society anyway.
Agree they shouldn't have to declare their sexual preferences at all, but sadly it's not a case of not declaring. It's more likely that some players feel they have to hide who they actually are, perhaps from almost everyone. I can't begin to imagine the toll that would take on someone's mental well being.
I imagine it’d especially be horrible for them as they’ll probably have girls throwing themselves at them and teammates expecting them to be seeing someone. They’d have to pretend to like the female attention and never show any attention to anyone they actually do like in case anyone found out or suspected anything. Could be 15 years (a random guess at the length of their career) they have to stay single and pretend to join in the ‘banter’.
Say what you want about the ‘enlightened modern football fan’, if he’s playing well the opposition fans will throw it at him, if he’s playing badly our fans would. (Some of, obviously) Sad but true.
Only thing that matters is the player being treated the same way as his team mates. If he plays well fans will be happy and if he plays rubbish fans will get annoyed just like for anyone else.
in 2019 why the hell does anybody have to reveal their sexual preference?. I'm just shrugging my shoulders. who gizza **** ?
Because they've been persecuted and discriminated against for years. Can imagine they have thought about this and now feel comfortable at coming out ....spoken to a few gay friends and they found this the hardest part.
