Whilst not originally from Barnsley, I lived for many years in and around town. I used to use an expression I picked up from someone years ago and must have passed on to my daughter. She used it today at her place of work and no-one she worked with had heard it or knew what it meant. It is when you eat something that "makes your ears laugh" i.e. something really strong tasting or acidic that has that effect at the back and sides of your mouth (hard to describe exactly) Has anyone here heard it and if so is it in common use?
Never heard it before, although a wallop round the head from my dad used to be described as making your ears sing.
My mum is from Northern Ireland - you'd not know it to hear her speak - and married my dad who's from Penistone. They moved to Penistone in 1983. I have definitely, stake-my-life-on it, heard her use that expression when eating things like pickled onions. I think - but am not as sure - that dad has been known to use it too.
That is interesting. I picked the expression up from someone I worked with at Barnsley college who lived in Penistone. Might be a local expression from that area .
My mrs is from Brampton, and I think she had picked up the expression from her dad, who was from Darfield originally.
