I wonder how long our powers of "holding out" will last? Maybe the new regime at Oakwell is getting to grips with the real (football) world.
When Waghorn is being touted about for £8m for a championship club then we should set that as the benchmark. Anywhere around £2m with add ons and think most of our players are up for grabs.
For me we are only one or two key player signings from a competitive squad. However, losing one or two at this stage renders us uncompetitive in my book. By competitive I mean top 6. I agree with an earlier post that integrating new players at this stage becomes harder to get a good start. Likewise rearranging things if players leave at this stage is perhaps worse. If we believe this squad is good enough and is the basis of our plan for this season then offers should be rejected, full stop. If we have a plan to sell and expect our valuation to be met we must have a plan B ready to go. My confidence isn't high though given GG already said we had a Plan A and B on recruitment of players. I can only assume plan B was - don't sign anyone if we drop to L1, but accept we will have a weaker squad.
Some ridiculous lines in that Potts was one of the few shining lights last season Barnsley want to keep all of their best players
My magical crystal ball tells me around the last day or hours of the transfer window acceptable bids will be made, The shock can be heard..............nowhere And darn it even though we tried and tried as hard as we could to get replacements in before the transfer window closed, we just couldn't get the deals over the line. Cue loan players trudging through the door
And Jack Marriott from Peterborough to Derby for a reported £3 million, rising to £5 million?? Tom is a capped Welsh international and proven scorer at Championship level. I would love to hear that the management team has put its foot down again and said that we need him for the season.
At times last season he was a liability . For ever in way of other players. Running without changing direction .meaning untimely he just ran out of play with the ball. Dont mention his first touch which illustrates he probably trap a medicine ball let alone a football But it s a new season so I will give gum another chance
I think we have a very competitive side for league 1 but it's quite thinly balanced from being competitive to mid table stuff. Come deadline day if we haven't added to the side, we can't accept anything other than stupid money for any of our key players, unless they can guarantee a permanent replacement of same or better quality would be brought in. If we cave in on deadline day and sell for ball park market value, rather than inflating the prices, then only bring in loans. I agree with 'icer' in the post earlier in the thread, we lose that competitive edge. So for me, only sell for silly money with the added condition that we can guarantee a permanent replacement can be signed..
Liability? I tend to disagree. No player covered themselves in glory and I wouldn't say Potts had a stand out season, but I felt he was one of the few who tried to drive forward, worked hard both in defense and attack and gave the ball away far less than his team mates.
Completely agree. Was thrown straight in from L2 - quite a step up from facing L2 midfield to the talent in the championship.
This should be the first time in many many yrs we don’t let players go on the cheap. We let far too many good players leave on the cheap. Stones included Peterbourgh sold a striker for 2milluon rising to 5 million, what’s 1 million when it will cost more to replace, 1 million gets you Thiam These days. He may be the difference to use staying up or not. Keep unless 2-3 million comes in
