    2/1 Barnsley, 2/1 Burton.

It's a cruel world out there, but I'm afraid that reflects the huge uncertainty about our situation.

Makes you smile really. We have to bring in upwards of 10 new players and they have got us down as one of the favourites to go down. I think it's best we reserve judgement until our new team runs out of the tunnel in August.
We should have a better idea after that as to how well equipped we are at best to mount a challenge or at worst to stay in the division for another season.

If we'd have kept all our players, and lost in the play off final, we'd still be favourites to go down. Means **** all

Don't recall us selling our entire team at the end of the 95/96 season.

Based on current form and the fact that we have to start again seems about right. Let's hope we can prove them wrong.

Yes exactly, these bookies are pathetic really when it comes to our pre season odds every year.
They dont take the quality of the squad or the previous seasons form into account at all, they just put us as the favourites for relegation every single season at this level.
Its more understandable these days but they kept doing it when we were a much more establised side even in the 80s & 90s.

With a hint of reality, we pay first division wages and lose quality in January. We over achieved this year and we would need to do that again next year. I can't really disagree with the odds you just have to hope Hecky can pull a rabbit out of the hat again.

I cant disagree witht that Archey, but like I also said when going back to the days when we were much more established at this level, they (the bookies) still showed us total ignorance every season.

ps - Bear in mind, in 94-95 we were amongst the three favourites to go down with Southend & Grimsby that season. All three clubs had good seasons so it shows that the bookies should be ignored!

Can't moan at that. I have us as second favourites right now.

    All depends on recruitment

In all fairness, especially coming from someone who knows a bit about a bet such as you, Orsen, aren't odds usually mostly based on market expectance?

We'll always be made a bit longer for winning stuff/shorter for losing/going down etc because we're 'a team like Barnsley'. A large percentage of people making bets don't base them on much knowledge of form etc, just who they think are vaguely better than etc.

So, we'll end up in a lot of people's relegation bets, along with Burton. So the bookies can't offer a decent price on us going down, cos if we do they'll have a right payout on.

That being said, it is probably balanced off with the fact we've been fairly ***** since Jan, and keeping it as low as 2/1 is to avoid enticing people to sink a bet with us as they probably think there's something in it!

Fair comment, BBB. 2/1 is probably fair, given our uncertainties at the moment, and it's of no interest.

On the other hand, if you can get any money on at the quoted 25/1 with Skynobet for Steve McLaren to be next Middlesbrough manager I would do so. My recent record with that firm means they will only lay me a £1, but you may have more joy if you don't have a 'record' with them. I can tell you that Dutch Steve was sighted in Yarm (Teesside) on Friday evening!

And lo and behold! My £1 with them barely five minutes ago now sees him clipped to 22/1! Get on quick lads!

How certain are you Mr kaht?
The most I could get on was.... £17.73p

    That'll do though!
    £400 return!

Yes, we were favourites to go down in 1996/7.

When we bet at those prices we're not dealing in 'certain', Mr CR. But all I can tell you is:
1 He is Middlesbrough's most successful former manager.
2 He remains a friend of Steve Gibson.
3 He only left Boro last time for the permanent England manager's job.
4 As I say, he was sighted in Yarm on Friday night.

He has since my first post above been cut to 22's, 16's, and now 11's. No certainty, but some pretty strong straws in the wind, I'd say.
