I find it incredulous that we, Barnsley, had crowds as low as 1,577 back in the day. How? Why? If we were relegated to the bottom division now I reckon we'd still be pulling in 6,000 minimum

We were not relegated because we were already in division 4 in our first visit to that division. However, had we lost those two games we would have had the ignominy of applying for re-election to the league (almost a formality in those days) but embarrassing none the less. The bottom 4 had to apply in those days before promotion and relegation to/from the 5th tier.

As it was those two wins took us to 16 in the 4th division, the lowest position, which I think was our position the following season after an awful start and a financial rescue by Messrs Dennis and Buckle and a goal scoring rescue by Messrs Thomas and Evans.

This and the rest is history as they say.

I was at that Crewe game and remember the cross bar incident in a slightly different way. I could be wrong but I thought Mailey pulled the bar down himself. It seems incredible thinking about it that punching a ball against it would wreck the structure. He was a small guy with a good leap and I think he just went up to save a high shot and knocked the bar off it’s mounting so to speak. There was certainly a delay and I had to miss the end of the match to run home for my evening paper round (Jack Harston’s shop, Doncaster Road).

I was stood behind the goal at the cop end when it happened & my recollection is that he actually pulled the bar down as he pushed the ball over for a corner , but I have slept several times since then. I always stood behind the goal which ever way we kicking ,at half time just simply walked from one end to the other , imagine that happening today !

Yes I think you are right. Certainly your theory or mine stands up better than him punching the ball against the bar!
