It's times like this when one of your boyhood hero's pass to spirit you realized how fast time goes by.. It doesn't seem two minutes since we were glued to the TV sets watching that one of many world class saves RIP Gordon Banks thanks for the happy memories ... Condolences to all the family
My earliest football memory is his save in the 1970 World Cup. Great is a word too readily bandied about these days, but this humble man absolutely was. RIP Gordon.
Very sad - everyone who knew him said what a great guy he was - best goalkeeper in the world in his prime such a shame he was suffering from food poisoning in the 1970 QF as I doubt he would have been beaten by the shot Bonetti let in when England were comfortably beating the Germans Like Exile above says - one of my earliest football memories is the save from Pele - but he was far more than just a good shot stopper RIP
Sad, sad news. Without doubt, the best English goalkeeper I've ever seen and the best in the world at his prime.
Had the pleasure to meet the great man, and gain a much treasured autograph. Such a quiet gentleman. RIP Gordon.
RIP Gordon and commiserations to his family and friends. One of my boyhood heroes never to be forgotten
Was lucky to go on a cruise round the Med with him, Alan Mullary and Ronnie Glavin. He was a lovely guy, very down to earth. Mullary was a bit of a dick, Ronnie was a class act - I played in a game with him where he was left back and I was left wing. T'was very coo. Even at the age of 45 or so against some semi-pro local teams with young lads he was just pure class. So much time on the ball.
A lovely tribute here from the greatest player of all time https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47215837
I can remember once going to Hillsborough to watch him play . I stood on the kop and the little piggies started making monkey chants and throwing bananas at him.. He took it all in fun picked up half a dozen or so placed them inside the goal... Gave them the thumbs up and then proceeded to peel one and eat it...
