For those who knew him, former top level referee Trelford Mills sadly passed away this morning (Monday 3rd June) at Weston Park. Trelford was also a Barnsley Cricket Club player, captain, committee member and fund raiser, and he also played for Stainborough CC for a few years and MCd our annual dinner many times. He also entertained supporters in the Legends Suite at Oakwell for a few seasons, with his post match referee assessments. A fine local man who will be sadly missed in cricket and football circles both locally and nationally. RIP Trelford.
RIP Telford, I used to serve on the same committee of Barnsley Referees Association as Telford. He and the late Dave Phillips were football league refs at the time. Both were looked- up to and well respected.
Went to a few of the cricket dos at Ardsley house and always asked him about that Newcastle game... he used to laugh and say the geordies still havent forgot about it. RIP Trelford.
He once reffed a local Saturday or Sunday game many moons ago (Jump) sent off one of the Jump players , when said player failed to keep ball in play and came out with one or two choice words loudly to hissen. Jimmy Noble local lad said “ nar then Trelford would tha ev sent Bryan Robson fot same” response. A smile. RIP Trelford.
Sorry to hear this. Always looked out for him reffing games when I younger as I knew he was from Barnsley. RIP
Sad news. A neighbour of my parents and top bloke. Always used to chat with me about Barnsley. RIP Telford
Forever revered by Mags fans old enough to remember. RIP Trelford. https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/s...ford-mills-scuppered-newcastles-fa-cup-hopes/
So sad to hear this.He used to run and coach a junior team that my son and his played for, top man, used to run the line when needed, one match he flagged for offside and the guy at the side of me shouted " dus tha know t'rules lino " erm aye I think he dus says I, seen as tho he's a top class ref. Last time I saw him was at Shaw Lane before they altered it all, I hadn't seen him for years but being the gent he was he came from the other room to have a word. R.I.P Trelford.
Sad news indeed, he was a nice man. I don't know whether he still lived on Hunters Avenue, but friends of ours held him in high regard as a neighbour, and he was great support to them with their first son who had a degree of cerebral palsy from birth. During the summer of 1984, a large group of lads and a few dads including mine used to play social cricket up at Shaw Lane on what felt like every evening. I remember him joining in with us on what was the archery field up at Shaw Lane (think it is where the AstroTurf is now) - no heirs and graces, must have spent two hours with us, sent plenty of catches to the kids. You could see then his love of cricket. RIP to a good man.
Last saw him at my Dad’ s funeral in November 2017 - they had a long standing friendship through Shaw Lane and cricket as well as BFC. He was in high spirits, spoke at the wake, but privately shared news of his illness which was recently diagnosed. As I now live in the North East I got him to publicly tell the story of NUFC v Brighton which he did so in such a humorous way but believing to the day he was right. His name is still mentioned up here in same way we mention George Courtney and Trevor Kettle but Trelford had many, many good top games under his belt. I only have to say Barnsley to a certain generation up here and his name comes up! Sad loss of a smashing bloke. RIP Trelford
Yes mate. They are really good old friends of my parents, who lived opposite Liz in Brierley before she married Frank. Her parents, Beryl and Cec Nunn ran a farm on Cliff Lane and I can't remember exactly how Frank's parents knew mine but they were known to each other before Liz courted Frank I believe. Not seen them myself for quite a few years now, but my mother still bumps into them in town now and again I believe. What a small world.
