If true, I think as has been pointed out if we'd offered him a new deal and he'd signed then by the time that ran out we'd probably have got nowt for him as a 30 year old.

I think I'd rather have had him for a few more years as captain than the 3.5 million or whatever it is tbh.

We don't know what conversations went on behind the scenes. Why make a formal contract offer if you know it won't be accepted?

Perhaps much depended on what Roberts' minimum expectation was on wages. I know its all hypothetical without full knowledge of what was said, and by whom, and when, but if his agent sets a minimum demand and it's beyond what BFC feel they can realistically offer, then it does beg the question why bother making an offer in those circumstances. I accept that may not be the case.

The problem is their was no discussion not even at the most basic level to a player that would have preferred to stay.

It's all speculation, he may never have been offered a contract in writing but I'd imagine there were talks with his agent & it was a scenario where we never going to be able to afford what he was been offered elsewhere

If he wants to stay, all he has to do is say no thanks to Birmingham and the pay increase he will undoubtedly get.

As I posted in the other thread....

No reason we couldn't have offered a 12 month extention. So it's 1 year left at the end of next season.

You know so we are not starting from scratch again.

    But what do we know.

He'd have as much value at the end of next season and IF we didn't decide on a whole fire sale next year at least we could have looked at replacing half a team instead of everyone.

He wasn't offered a deal, because the time was right to cash in. That's what the blueprint is all about.

We have to assume from that that we had a younger and in Hecky's view better prospect lined up
so it made sense to cash in on what was seen as an "asset" or we knew that whatever we might offer would
be bettered elsewhere so he's moved on with our full blessing.

A Club I was associated to once took a young lad for a trial at Donny and they signed a lad from Rotherham instead.
The lad from my Club later went on to play for Leeds and was transferred to Everton for a good fee.

The kid from Rotherham never made it. One of the Rovers Directors used to drink in the same WMC in Donny as me.
The lad I knew came on as a sub for Leeds in the 1968 League Cup Final and that night the Director was in the telly room
enjoying a pint so I took it up with him. He said " look kid if the Manager told me he was bringing Donald Duck in and he was going to improve the team who am I to argue." ? I had to concede you couldn't say fairer than that.

****** off with the whole thing - are we a football club or what ?

Crocodile tears and ******** words from the club it looks like to me regarding player departures.

Don't get too fond of these new lads

It seems the club aren't willing to pay Championship wages. They'd rather cash out and gamble on a 'potential' player, on league 1 or below pay levels.

Why are those the 2 options. Do you only understand selling players at the end of their contracts? You've been institutionalised by bfc it would seem!!

I'm massively behind hecky and our policy and excited for the new season but something just doesn't sit right with me robbo going to Birmingham for not a big transfer fee and also no contract offer from us. A reasonable uplift in wages and a year's extention then I would think robbo 's valuation would be much higher at the end of the coming season and we would have had a better chance of stability in the championship for another year and giving the new lads time to settle. Anyway you reds keep going.

If for one second people honestly don't think we ever talked to him about a new deal and probably worked out we couldn't match or get anywhere close to what he could elsewhere. If he wanted to stay he would have had his wages been able to fit into our wage structure. Ultimately money talks.

I suspect - as I posted yesterday- that I don't think Roberts wanted to leave - I think he just wasn't a type of player they Hecky likes - so they have cashed him in.
So IMO Hecky thinks the players we have brought in are better than Roberts - we'll see.
    It would be nice tho.

If you think that Hecky is the one choosing to sell his captain then you're dafter than I thought
