Hard to say really. Like quite a few players over the years, he seemed to have his best time with us playing at this level and then the old second division. Went to Portugal and scored a few but was only there for a season before coming back to us. I'm not sure if we turned down any bids from bigger clubs when he was with us?
We bought him for £40,000 in the summer of 1979, which is approximately £200,000 in today's money. A bargain
Winchester tyke Can you remember a play we had called Anton I can’t remember is surname if I remember we sold him to West Ham if I am right
Hopefully the today's young lads and lasses will be talking up the more recent promotion seasons and stand out players in decades to come. Yesterday there was a fair bit of "yeah we won, but" posted on here, but you have also to consider that these lads, in their current form (having already broken a 40 year record) are heroes to the young fans, just as the Clark and Hunter teams were to us.
Tbf I think 40k then may have been a record fee back then for us.... I know we payed 30k for Derek Bell the year before... Before that apart from Clarkey himself.. we only got free transfers and payed peanuts
Lad from Drewsbury as I remember... Good little player.. We must have been skint that week, din't we sell Martin Gorry?
Yuo and replaced them both with Graham Pugh from Chester & John Collins from Sheffield Wenesday during the next couple of months.
