Remember that away end - must have been well over the 'safe' crowd numbers in there.....it were like bloody sardines!
The worst thing was the lane outside the ground. Got stuck in a serious cross there in a cup replay in 78/79. Only one f-ing turnstile open.
Great game. Great team. Great support. Great hat trick. And in the last minute, the greatest of them all runs the length of the pitch to poach a goal and put the game beyond doubt.
I remember the alley that ran down the side . Myself, Dad and my mother were in fear of our lives it was that packed with bodies. It was total chaos..
I bloody loved that away kit. Clean, simple, did the job. And yes, that alley down the side of Millmoor was an absolute nightmare.
Really enjoyed that thanks. Just a bit before my time but brought back memories of matches in the 80s. Brilliant
Proper local derby, and would be eagerly anticipated for weeks. Exciting times for us young lads. onto the special, singing all the way from the station to the ground in the police escort and crammed into the away end. Today's youth must see these crowds and feel a bit badly done to. Also, the team's had danger men that the opposing fans would fear and single out for attention. Football might have progressed in many ways, but comparing that atmosphere and just the general interest to now, it's gone backwards in that respect.
Remember there was castiron man hole near corner flag ..fkw And e&s sports over road top trainer shop..
Mind you at one time at Oakwell to pay a visit you had walk down some stairs and pee behind the brewery stand. Whilst In the corner of the ponty end was a brick built shelter for the saint johns ambulance which the kids sat on. Happy days.
Most scared I've ever been at a match. Was getting crushed against the wall trying to push hundreds off me. Can still remember hardly being able to breathe ... amazed no one was hurt.
Aye and it didn't help that SYP, in their infinite wisdom, had put a horse and rider in the alley to make it even tighter. Mind you after a match like that I couldn't care.
It was a great day , a great match & what made it even better is that Rotherham actually were a very good side , a fantastic result & performance
Definitely, they only missed promotion to the first division by 4 points and would have made the play-offs if only they had existed then.....
