I wouldn’t mind a cap of ticket prices to away fans first. If they’re going with 20 is plenty for salary caps then let’s do 20 is plenty on tickets!
How would that apply to relegated premier league clubs. Who will have invested on wages with the knowledge of parachute payments way beyond the cap. Something has to be done to stop players taking all the money out of the game. And stop the obscene wages being handed out. Maybe a step in the right direction and put a lot more clubs on a more level playing field
Quite straightforward really - there simply HAS to be a clause in every player's contract to the effect that you will either be transferred/reduce your salary accordingly
Instead of parachute payments to clubs, this goes to the league who agree to take over the contracts of 4 players for two seasons. Those players are then not included in the salary cap. It would then be up to the club to reduce the overall salary of the rest of the squad to the required levels. Then have set penalties on a sliding scale so everyone knows where the clubs stand - £1m over cap equals 2 point deduction, £2m equals 5 point deduction etc - starting the following season eg in season20/21 club X were over the cap by £2m, so they automatically start season 21/22 on -5 points. If they were to get promoted to the Prem whilst over budget then the points penalty is applied for the next season in the EFL eg a team gets promoted in season 20/21 whilst £5m over the cap which would incur a 10 point reduction. They are relegated the following season in 21/22 so automatically start season 22/23 with -10 points.
Far too convoluted and doesn’t make any sense to punish them for the season after they cheated. If you cheat to try and get promotion, you should get a point deduction in that season and the table adjusted accordingly. Also the league paying players contracts just would not work. What if a club cheated, got promoted then never came down?
Depends how straight forward it was to work out salary cap - are we talking just wages? Or bonuses too? To get clubs to finalise their accounts as soon as the final whistle sounds at the last game of the season may be pushing it. Imagine first leg of play offs happen, then EFL say to club that finished 3rd, actually you have automatic promotion as the team that finished 2nd has now had points docked. And the team that finished 7th takes you place in play offs. Also the league paying players contracts just would not work. Why not? Instead of the Prem paying parachute payments to the club they pay them to the EFL who then take on the contracts. If the player is sold then that is it and the contract is up. There might even be a residual amount to spread around other teams rather then the team that should have the parachute payment benefiting from it all. What if a club cheated, got promoted then never came down? Fair play to them - but there is only a finite number of place in the PL. Most teams that have recently gone up have come back down a few years later.
Clubs wouldn’t need to do their accounts before the playoffs. They would just submit the salaries and bonuses at the start of the season/end of Jan. I just don’t like the idea of the league having a financial interest in certain teams doing worse than others. Overall I think it’s the worst idea since JFK said “Let’s use the convertible today”
The Premiership have been looking to become a closed shop for years and this would give them a perfect excuse
I was always against a European super league but now I'm not so sure. As long as those clubs had nothing to do with English football we could have the salary cap and have a proper domestic league and FA cup again.
If accurate, the table in the first post serves to emphasise just how far some Clubs are prepared to go to pay their so called better players in the hope that they can reach the " promised land". At £42.4 million compared to ourselves and Rotherham and with the alleged breach of the current FFP guidelines hanging over them, the owner and board of Sheffield Wednesday should not be too surprised, if they are handed a hefty fine and a points deduction that puts them closer to the relegation zone than any chance they have at present of reaching the play offs. Cheats should never prosper.
Great idea in principal, but will not happen. Gibson at Middlesbrough tried to push through a proposal couple of seasons ago around FFP and it was squashed easily, with majority of league voting against it. How would a salary cap work? Surely it can only be a % of turnover/profit if so it’s just another FFP rehash. Clubs giving up £30/40 million in parachute payments? Never in a million years will any of the clubs who are breaching FFP would vote for this and neither would the clubs happy to sit just inside the threshold. Something needs to happen but it’s not this.
They’ll probably be allowed three years outside of the salary cap after they’re relegated, and in receipt of parachute payments. Meaning the former Premier League clubs are at even more of an advantage than already..
Surely the simple solution is clubs who come down cant sign any new players until they meet the salary cap - existing players can stay until their contracts expire or they are transferred, It wont happen though - I think the first comment to the tweet in the original post "Suspect this will get about as far as my emails to Kylie Minogue about sharing a hot tub." is as good a way of expressing the chances as any
