Just become Man City's all-time leading scorer, breaking the 80 year old record held by former Barnsley forward Eric Brook from Mexborough.
Incredible player. A little injury prone but definitely the best striker in the league. I imagine he'll hold the record by some margin by the time he’s done.
We've been doing quite a bit of digging on Eric...people don't seem to realise but in his day he was considered in the same vein as Lofthouse and Matthews...quite a good record for England too ....10 goals in 18 games before a car accident cut his career short.
Third best in the world for me behind Ronaldo and Messi. Barmy that Argentina bench him alot and it nearly cost them world cup qualification. Would have beaten the record much sooner as he's had bad luck over the years with injuries. Up there with Henry as one of the best the premier league as ever seen.
I'm not sure about that, my mates have done most of the work, they did the old newspaper and local history stuff, I helped out a bit with the genealogy . I've been at 9 Dolcliffe Rd, Mexborough for 30 years, the 1911 census shows Eric and his family lived at No 7 ...the houses are long gone though. One thing that is interesting is that throughout his football career Eric played cricket for both Mexborough and Swinton Cricket Clubs swapping back and forth between the two. Eric is one who has really gone under the radar..my mate Bill and I are both ST holders at Oakwell and are really keen on local history...Bill is Chair of Mexborough Heritage Society and we didn't know about him till the Society got a call from a journalist in Manchester.
Yep, I am also very keen on the club's history, and I must admit I'd never heard much about Eric Brooks until yesterday. Certainly he never seems to be mentioned in the same context as Taylor, Blanchflower, Robledo, and others who played for BFC and then went on to greater things.
Incredible player, such a shame that injuries have hindered him so much, amazes me how much power he gets when he strikes a ball for his size.
