Hecky said last week that the club aren't in a position to let anyone leave the club at present, loan or otherwise. We've lost Barnes and Ugbo (whether we had any control over that is unclear) and have let Josh Kay leave and Jared Bird leave on loan since then. Surely replacements are lined up and must surely be a formality?
We didn’t have any control over Barnes or Ugbo, both were recalled by their parent club. Re Josh Kay and Jared Bird, they’re absolutely miles down the pecking order, particularly after Gardner’s revival and Mallan’s introduction.
There can be some overreactions but most fans thought Ugbo wasn’t good enough, Kay hasn’t made it this season, Bird is a good player who will benefit from a loan but plays in a position where we are well stocked. We need some players in but quality is very much more important than quantity. Striker and winger are the only positions where we are short on numbers
Agree with this. I think it may have been more of an agreement with us and Chelsea though so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a striker signing fairly imminently.
More often than not loan agreements contain an option for the parent club to recall which has been exercised here on both occasions. Rarely do such agreements contain a reciprocal option for the club in our position to terminate early. That being said, I don’t think that we would’ve been overly upset at Ugbo going back as it frees up a further loan spot and any wages that we were contributing under the terms of the loan. I also think that we would’ve looked to improve our attacking options regardless of whether Ugbo was recalled or not so I think that this is the best solution for all parties.
Why are they a formality ? Do we want to sign players for the sake of signing or do we try to get the ones we have identified over the line, even if it takes time to do it , please no panic signings
That depends on whether there’s a recall option in the loan agreement and also whether he would (a) feature in PH’s plans, (b) secure a more beneficial loan elsewhere or (c) there’s interest in a permanent move so we recall to sell. I highly doubt it, but we’ll see.
I didn't mean that. What I meant was that Hecky suggested nobody would be let leave until we had replacements lined up. I wasn't referring to rushing into signings or panic buying players, merely that one or two signings must be close if we've allowed at least 2 players leave after saying we only would if others were incoming.
I think replacements for young inexperienced players are probably already at the club , I expect to see some more academy graduates being included in & around the ist team , ie Brown
The reason I raised it was that Jacob Brown was the player used as an example when Hecky was asked whether players were going out on loan. He replied with words to the effect of 'not until we have replacements, no'. I agree, and I think the 2 who have left today have fallen foul to the number of midfield players we have at the club already. We'll have to wait and see what the weekend brings.
Brown is a completely different kettle of fish to the likes of Kay/Bird. You only have to glance at the CM/ST options at PH’s disposal.
Aye, and whilst McGeehan hasn't played regularly, he's certainly a first team player, and one of the ones we expected to be making a mark in the team. He still will in my opinion. I get the impression we've another player, possibly on loan, waiting to come in.
