Below are what all the parts of the coat of arms are supposed to mean... The arms were officially granted on 19 October 1869, the supporters were granted on 13 August 1913. The falcon with padlock, and the boar's heads with crosses, are from the arms of the local families of Locke and Beckett, and the griffin is the crest of the Wentworth family of Wentworth Woodhouse. The emblems in the chief stand for Monk Bretton Priory, a Cluniac foundation dating from 1157; the arms of the Priory were two silver cups and a cross on black. The shuttles, pickaxes and supporters represent local industries. So, is Beckett the same family as C K Beckett? And have the Wentworths and Lockes ever had owt to do with the club? Just wondering as never really looked into it... Just wondering why we would have part of Wentworth's family crest on our club crest for example?
I think the Beckett family are the ones associated with the old Becketts hospital that used to be located near Tech
Back in the 1800s, the Fitzwilliams/Wentworths were the biggest landowners in Barnsley (and Rotherham).
I saw something recently that the Fitzwilliam family that lived in Wentworth were making £5m a month in the 1930s from Mining and other activities which made them by far the richest family in the UK.
