    It’s more to do with the percentage of GDP allocated to fund it. Thatcher is responsible as with most things. It used to run at the same rate as Germany’s at about 12 percent she reduced it and it’s now about 5 percent.

    Many factors come into consideration you're quite right. Sweden's state pension is over 25,000£ but they pay high contributions for the privilege. It also costs over double to drink and eat out over there than here too. South Africa's state pension is only 1,044£...... but one must bare in mind the average annual salary there is only 7,421£.
    Britain's state pension however is one of the lowest in the developed world. There are many reasons for this, but it didn't happen overnight did it? Government after government after government of whatever persuasion have overseen the state pension.

    Social Security Act 1980 link broken between pension increase and average earnings. Loss to pensioners roughly 30 quid a week. Most problems in modern Britain link back to Thatcher.

    That's because we haven't had a progressive pm govt since Harold Wilson's .
    The most progressive we have had was McDonald's in 20s 30s and Atlee's in 40s
    Since the we've either had down right selfish bstds or utter twonks who have put party first and self promotion.
    The Media destroy anyone who dares to be radical these days.

    Yep a draconian 'dictatorship' that was hell-bent on drawing the state away from it's responsibilities to it's peoples: pure conservative ideology. Blair didn't do us any favours here either though did he? Like I said, this is a long historical issue.

    Blair was as Thatcherite as they come. Thatcher called him her greatest triumph. The last Labour Govt was 1974 until Callaghan took over.

    Not really Blair's government's were moderate for sure and the early years were very good for working people. Government's need to be progressive not backward thinking.
