A season playing and scoring regularly in L1 just what he needed. Championship was too much too soon.

Pleased for him and hope he keeps on doing it. And not just because Shrewsbury are my second team!

 

Makes you wonder whether we should have loaned him for a season.

 

Nah, not for me. Just because he sometimes finds the net at a lower level doesn't mean he is good enough for this level or ever will be. I hope he does well for Shrewsbury and wish him well. But I am not sorry we let him go.

Good on him. Right for everyone for him to move on, but I wonder if we've got any sort of buy-back clause?

 

How exactly does a buy-back clause work? Surely any club thinking they may need the player in the future would just send them on loan for a year?

 

Guessing age was a factor, players have normally found their level by 26

 

You can include a clause in a transfer agreement that you get first dibs on a player when he's sold, typically for a pre-agreed fee. You'd usually slightly reduce the transfer fee as part of the negotiation.

 

I honestly doubt we've got one, but it could have been something we looked at. My understanding is that the selling club has an agreed fee and first dibs at the player if they want them back. It's what Barcelona did with Deulofeu from Everton and Man City have done with Ihenacho. I suppose it's because clubs feel the player isn't currently not needed but could be in the future, but it's longer term than a loan

 

Fair enough. But what if the club doesn't wish to sell, or another club makes a far better offer with better personal terms for the player? Let's say for argument's sake, we've got a buyback clause for Payne. He knocks in 30 goals this season, and Middlesbrough come in and offer £3 million and 20k a week. What would happen then?

 

But the point is the initial buying team gets the player for a reduced initial fee or gets a player they wouldn't necessarily get otherwise

 

That's clear enough. But you can see the potential issue in the scenario I've outlined.

"Middlesbrough want to buy you and pay you £20,000 a week Stefan, but unfortunately you've got to go back to Barnsley, who'll be paying you £4k."

It's unlikely to go down very well with the player.

 

Isnt that the case with a lot of clauses though?

"Middlesbrough want to sign you and pay you £20,000 a week Angus, but unfortunately you've got to extend your contract with us who will be paying you £4k"

 

In which case, it would just put the club in a stronger negotiating position when the player's agent inevitably forces a move. A contract extension is slightly different to being forced to be transferred back to a club who are paying you from the word go, far less than your perceived market value.

 

I don't think a buy back clause actually works like that anyway. I think it just means that the club must accept the offer it doesn't mean the player must agree personal terms. I would imagine that if we wanted him back for an arranged fee of say £500k and Middlesbrough want him for £2m then they accept other bids and the player agrees terms with whichever he wants a bit like if two clubs both offer £10m

 

That sounds very logical.

 

Just realised shrewsbury are top of league one I know it's early days but would be nice to see him in the championship next season with shrewsbury.

 

Shrewsbury were a second tier side when I first started watching us in the 80's. I remember a particularly dull game when they were already as good as down. We beat them 1-0 but were absolutely dreadful, even when they had to play a large chunk of the match with an outfield player in goal. Sadly I wasn't at the game when David Moyes scored our winner in the last minute!

 

After a long period in the 3rd and 4th divisions, we eventually got back to the second tier. Shrewsbury were the first team we played from recollection, and we beat them 4 - 0. Worth the long trip from Bordeaux.
