Seeing sugar is one of the new evils these days, (with fat, salt and sunshine being the others)... folk may want to look at what they are being told is a better for you, rather than natural sugar.

I won't touch chemical sweeteners, but equally I don't want to fill my body with sugar. How about just lowering the amount in recipes? Most stuff tastes too sweet anyway. Probably something to do with sweetness receptors and addiction.

That's a YouTube video, not a peer-reviewed scientific journal. There's enough scientific misinformation in the daily press so I'll pass on this one.

Fat is widely recognised now as not being a such a big problem, rather the the sugar companies supported research which blamed fat so as not harm their business. In the absence of excessive quantities of sugar, fat is ok.

Salt is absolutely required, particularly for those that do plenty of exercise and/or sweat a lot. Otherwise, it can be harmful in large quantities. My ex went to the doctor with pain in her toes which he said was salt-deficiency (she had believed all the scare stories and massively reduced her salt intake), he told her to eat bacon sandwiches.

Moderate sunshine exposure is not harmful, sunburn can be.

Basically, don't over-indulge in anything, eat a balanced diet and take reasonable exercise and you'll be fine.

Our digestive system evolved over millions of years and is ideally suited to the diet we had before "civilisation". Mass production of processed foods is the cause of most of our modern problems like obesity and IBS etc.

I'll take my chances. I basically never touch sugary drink as my mam's diabetic so only had sugar-free stuff growing up. Sugary drinks taste horribly sweet to me and I see no point in drinking that much sugar when I enjoy the diet version anyway.

The artificial sweeteners are as bad if not worse than refined sugar.

Aspartame is one of the most researched chemicals ever.

No one has ever found anything 'bad' about it.

There have been fairly recent scare stories surrounding processed smoked meats, bacon, salami etc etc. Salumi here in Le Marche is eaten regularly, .... smoked pancetta, Salami, Mortadella, Bresaola all sorts of cured meats, and yet Italy has the highest life expectancy in Europe and one of the highest in the Developed world. Marche has the highest in Italy. France has the zone of the Duck Fat enigma where we are told duck fat clogs the arteries with cholesterol but the area where lots of duck is consumed has the lowest heart disease rates in France. Go figure.....! As you say moderation in all things and modest exercise is the key.

    Not for a diabetic.

She's been drinking plenty of sugar-free pop for over 30 years; until she shows any adverse effects from it I think I'll be fine :)
