    Errr...It IS the union flag...

...it is only a Union jack when flown from a sea vessel such as a Royal Navy Frigate etc. At least that is what I was taught

Its not the Union Jack unless he's on a ship.

Does it count if he's on a spaceship?

The Union Jack,[note 1][2][3] or Union Flag, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. The claim that the term Union Jack properly refers only to naval usage has been disputed, following historical investigations by the Flag Institute in 2013. Both from Wikipedia.

Not often I'm right but I'm wrong again!!....

In fact we are all probably wrong (although Tosh is probably the closest to being right) on this as expert sources seem to agree that the two terms are interchangeable. Jack refers (referred) to the small flag flown at the jack staff bow of a naval ship. The distinction has eroded over time and since 1906?? apparently jack and flag have become interchangeable. This is still debated in some quarters.

Jack didn't actually refer to the jackstaff, that came later. It was originally only the size

Either way, I'm not sure where korky has got the notion that we are 'not allowed' from.
