I was too, my Dad took me to that and the Everton game, but all I can remember is being pushed about on the kop.
Back of the Ponte end in the first half but I could hardly see anything so I moved to the Kop end for the second and found a decent spot by the old sliding gates.
Those were the days....neck brace, strapped to the stretcher, gurney on the touchline...nope...grab a limb each and haul 'im off!
The first time I watched Barnsley play Bolton at Oakwell was towards the end of the 1971/72 season. We were relegated to Division 4 at the end of that campaign, but managed to beat Bolton 1-0 (a veritable cricket score for us under the then manager John McSeveney). The only reason that particular match has stuck in my mind is Wanderers had former England striker Roger Hunt in their line up. However, he had a very poor, ineffectual game that day. He was, though, the first player from England's World Cup winning team I saw play at Oakwell. The only others I saw were both during our 1980/81 promotion winning season, Martin Peters (Sheffield United) & Alan Ball (Blackpool player/manager).
That’s the day my old man was told to mark Dennis Law. He saw him before the game and said I’ll win every header, he never won one. He still calls Dennis Law one of the best players he’s ever seen. I regularly tell him didn’t see much of him that day, as he was in S71 and Eric was in S73
