I know we've some keen cycling enthusiasts on here, sounds like a good day for Team Sky. Thomas taking the Yellow Jersey and Froome having a good lead on many of his rivals (in sec: Yates 25, Porte 35, Quintana 36, Bardet 39, Aru 40, Contador 41, Fuglsang 42).

What are people's thoughts and expectations for the race?

Good day all round for Sky. Thomas time surprised me, even though he is a capable TT'er. Awful conditions, Valverdes crash was a bad one (broken kneecap I heard?). Only day 1 but some big names have a fair few seconds to make up already.

Made me smile that there are murmours of discontent about Skys kit being disrespectful to the jersey of the best young rider, yet nobody said a dickie bird about Tinko's yellow kit a couple of seasons ago.

Looking forward to some good racing, even I did a 16.2mph ride today :)

Best news for Sky is that Valverde is out of the race which will have a big impact on Quintana.

I don't consider Porte a genuine rival to Froome.

Shame Valverde is out already thats one of a few who are prepared to attack at the top of the leaderboard.

Great news ITV4 will be showing full live coverage everyday.

Is it worth putting a bet on Pierre Rolland for KOM?

Wouldn`t personally bet on cycling, Valverde backers for instance,

Rolland performed well recently and will be there or thereabouts but Raphael Majke would be my fancy

Give Froome and team Sky any kind of lead and they are really good at defending it in this race. They just hang on to anyone trying to break way and systematically break the hearts and resolve of those having to chase them.

Good day's racing yesterday. Felt a bit for the breakaway but always thought they would be caught.

I thought Sagan looked poor in the sprint - he was in a good position but failed badly. Cav looked fairly strong but Kittel is in the man to beat. Hopefully Cav will get stronger as the race progresses.

Cav would have won that on form. Not sure he will last three weeks as I know what glandular fever takes out of you. No wins in the next 8 days and I think he'll call it a day. Kittel looked strong. Hope they have a better days weather today - they deserve it.
Still has all the signs of looking like a classic Tour.

I can't decide which GC rider the lack of climbing favours the most. Shame there's a shortage of mountain top finishes.

I'd say so. I think him & Pinot will battle it out whilst stage hunting

Definitely looks like sagan threw out an elbow. Disappointing that he's been disqualified but probably deserved.

Cav has withdrawn with a broken shoulder, too. I did mine last week, I feel his pain.

I like Sagan, fantastic personality, superb skills, genuine all-rounder and an aggressive streak. But for me the elbow was cynical and he had to go. I cannot for the life of me understand why fellow pros are saying the other lads threw Sagan off course; I just don't buy that.

Pity that two of my favourite riders are out, just like that. All it has done is made the points race slightly more interesting.

Fractured my upper arm & shoulder in a bike accident in Australia in January. Only just about better.
    Very painful for several months.

Robert Millar = Phillipa York. Never saw that coming. Consequence of doping or natural course of action? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/40529614

I'm old school, can't really relate to things like this but ...... er ........ good luck to him / her I guess.
