Billy Elliot is based on a true story. And the boy was actually from Barnsley. For some strange reason the director/producer decided to base the movie in the North East. Knowing this ruined the film for me particularly watching the Miners strike scenes.
There was also a programme before the Full Monty that basically told the same story but was set in Barnsley. Can't remember what it was called but I remember one of the characters having Barnsley FC posters on the wall in his room...
Where the Heart Is had one of the nurses' son who was a Barnsley fan with loads of posters on his bedroom wall and one of the episodes had scenes filmed at Oakwell at a match v Crystal Palace just after relegation from the Prem when we were still getting big crowds.
K yhe full Monty was influenced by that play. The Italian lady director (forget her name ) mentioned it in an interview and the Star and radio dee dar never mentioned it
I think it was called "The Bare Necessities", and William Ash's character had the pictures on his wall. The Full Monty did seem to plagiarize it.
Look up what a real life Barnsley hero did with very little thanks or recognition - Sgt (I think) 'Dusty' Rhodes, SAS soldier of WW2. Determination, perseverance and all despite obstruction from the establishment. Remembered in a book by Damien Lewis. Respect.
Have you read the book “kiriakos” not sure of the spelling haven’t got the book on me to check but it’s about an ex collegue of mine who fought with the Greek resistance . Absolute hero he ended up living amongst them when he retired.
Well called ... They asked for extras and did the interviews in the old ring a bells on wellington street... I was sat in there the night they did the audition/ interviews having a drink , when i was approach and asked if i would like to have my photo taken with a view to having a part..i agreed had my photo taken and thought no more about it ..later that evening i got a call from the production team asking if id be interested in a speaking part, the following day i met with some of the production crew and they arranged for me to have a screen test the following week. I explained i was on the verge of taking a Pub over and hoped the dates didnt clash...woe and behold the dates clashed i couldnt change the take over date nor the screen test time and the wife at the time for some reason unknown to herself, refused to handle the takeover, A matter of just writing the balance on the cheques that id already signed......ah well ...it wasnt my time to kick that particular ball ..
Wouldn't the Globe have been pulled down before then? I do know they filmed him on a push bike on Bank End Rd.
Just had a google and you are indeed right, They filmed in the theatre in 1988 and it was demolished in 1990 to make way for the western relief rd
