Will we still be smiling come 5pm. Bradshaw/Moore/Potts/Lindsey all still Barnsley players & maybe 1/2 more additions
I think Bradshaw is the only player really at risk of going. I can’t see us signing anyone. I think a striker/winger will come in but on loan after deadline day.
Problem with this deadline is that we can't really breathe a sigh of relief. We can at the end of August. The real test is going to come in January when (hopefully) our players will have done well for a few months, that will really test the owners' resolve. Really pleased we haven't rolled over at the first chance, though!
I would be more than happy if we did not make any signings as long as we do not let anyone go . The squad looks pretty well balanced & mor signings could make us top heavy
Exactly this. Any championship side could still take any of our players on loan ‘with a view to making it permanent’ in the next window. So we could still realistically sell until 31 August, and whilst the club have been strong so far, if they are offered decent money they might well. 5pm today doesn’t really mean that much in that context.
Its aint gonna slam shut today, left 'slightly ajar' or 'ont first latch' till end of August, then it slams shut, except for Arsenal or Man Utd, they allus seem to complete a signing at aif 4 int morning... shits.
I think January could be challenging. We're either in promotion contention and clubs will be interested in players, or we're not in promotion contention and we've a number of players all available on a free transfer a few months after. If we're promoted (still a big if, even after the fantastic opening day) we may deem out of contract players Davies, Moncur, Bradshaw (if still here), Jackson, Hedges, Mowatt & Cavare (though we have an extra year option) surplus to requirements and look to recruit better, and writing off a possible transfer fee... which goes against "the plan" Will be interesting to see how and when we start negotiating with players on contract extensions. That's the aspect I think we've always been weakest on, and almost expecting a player to only have a maximum of a 2-3 year stay.
I think a lot will depend on how we are doing come January - if we are looking a decent bet for automatic I would think we will be looking to offer new contracts to any that have impressed - it all depends on how they do in the next 5 months. Any that are struggling to get game time I am sure we will be looking to offload
Maybe it slamming shut was what broke the fax machine last year when we were attempting to sign McBurnie?
I think if we’re up at the top it will be a lot easier to keep players as I think they’ll want to be involved in a possible promotion/title battle (not getting ahead of ourselves though). If we aren’t in the mix then I agree, I think a few players will be seeking moves away and given the contracts with a few, we could see some move on. I agree with you on the contracts. I would say that if we are doing well in the league then we need to be offering contract extensions before January I think. Get them signed up early and if they don’t sign then I suppose we look at moving them on (depending on each player’s situation of course).
I suppose if we aren't in promotion contention then we will be considering the need for new players anyway. Further I honestly think if we didn't finish top 6 then the manager would likely be sacked.
In other words ......... we are in uncharted waters. We haven’t a clue what is happening because we don’t know what these new owners are likely to do. I expected a few young talented continental players coming in - some of them breaking the current transfer amount that has been paid. That hasn’t happened - but has the club got the continental network in place to do that? You would think so with Ganaye, Stendel and links to Nice. So ...... owt could happen - we have had no surprises so far ...... maybe other than we have kept hold of certain players.
That's quite interesting, Nudge... I don't think you've mentioned that before. It has already been explained why Stendel isn't raiding Hannover and other German clubs. OGC Nice, I'm not sure whether that is viable. We're a third tier club at the moment, I can't see that there would be many overseas players at top French level wanting to swap southern France for third-tiered Barnsley. I may be proved wrong...
